Hi all

I'm in the process of refurbishing an old fobco drill as you can see in my fobco thread.

I have the spindle out and thought it would be an idea to check the spindle for straightness/runout before I go putting any bearings on it. Has anyone on here by any chance got the technology to check it for me , guessing a lathe and a dial gauge maybe ?

If you can do me a favour and are near me (shepperton middx) please get in touch.

Or if anyone else has an idea of a way I can check it myself let Mr know.

Cheers

Hi,

A piece of float glass or the top of your table saw should be flat, if you roll it across you should be able you see if it has a big problem.
Or a good ruler placed along side might work.

I would say the most accurate way to check the spindle would be in the chuck on a lathe with a dial gauge as you have mentioned. If you can't find anyone on here with the necessary to help you out you might consider asking a local small engineering company if they can oblige. I find some of the smaller firms can be very approachable and helpful and have helped me out on small tasks in the past.

Cheers guys

Pete , my dad was an engineer that was one option he said, to use glass that wouldn't be as accurate but good enough I suppose.

Might try a local engineering firm or all the talk about colleges made me think maybe my eldest sons school dt teacher could help if I get stuck.

I don't think it will be bent but as I'm putting a few quids worth of new bearings on it thought it best to check.

Chippy,
It would be a very rare occurrence for the spindle to be bent. Something quite dramatic would have to happen to the DP to do this.

Do you have any evidence to suggest that the spindle is bent..at all.

Did the previous bearings come off easily..if so probably not bent.

When you are refitting the bearings if you have not done it before I can give you a few tips if you PM me.

Cheers Al , I imagine you're right it probably isn't . The runout I had when I got the drill was most likely the bearings. I have a feeling someone might have done them before as the quill tube was actually upside down when I took it out lol .

I've changed bearings on various things and know to push on the inner race when putting on the spindle and outer race when putting into the quill. If I have any queries I will be in touch cheers.

Checked the spindle on some glass tonight and it does look slightly bent. It lifts off the glass by around 1mm in the middle as its rolled. I might have to look out for a helpful engineering shop nearby.
