I am not sure what material is used from this photogrpah but suspect it is laminated from thin sheets of ply in some kind of press or jig until the glue between the laminates dries.
I think I saw someting similar in Fine WoodWroking magazine a few months ago
I did something similar with ply that had been scored with a regular saw blade every 2" on the back - laborious! Made the ply extremely flexible, but lost some strength of course.
I imagine that while you could make it with ply as the others above have said, the actual desk material is probably a pressed alloy which is powdercoated.
