Grooves on the base of a Stanley plane???

Evening all, I have got a Stanley plane in the garage (I think it's a 5 1/2) that has got a number of grooves running the length of the plane on the base.
I've been trying to find out what exact model this is but had no joy, does anybody here know what it is and what they are for?
I'll post a pic if it helps but it'll have to be tomorrow.

I have a Stanley No.4C.....

The idea is that there is less friction when planing as less metal is in contact with the wood.

I can't say I notice but the C or corrugated range command more money on FleaBay...especially the old ones...

But it certainly works beautifully...

...though I think that is more down to the old iron than the corrugations! :wink:

'Course, some folks took the whole idea to extremes. Or made corrugations and then improved them.
