This is my first attempt at turning on my record power 305. It’s from a piece of very wet holly. So I don’t expect it to last. Chisels used were carbide ones by glen teagle from ukwoodcrafts.

Very good indeed........ for a start-up, it's excellent.

Holly can be unpredictable, but it can discolour when it dries. If wet when you started it may distort slightly, it may even split..... time will tell, but if you have the patience, try to slow the drying process as much as you can to minimise stresses in the wood.

Many vessels are rough turned when wet, then allowed to dry before being re-mounted and turned again. If it dries in time without splits, re-mount it and turn it again.

Thanks everyone. Hopefully will get some lessons off a local turner soon. It’s very addictive

Yes it was only cut down 3 weeks ago. And the is small amounts of spalting in some pieces. I have put briwax clear on it as that’s all I have at the moment. And it’s kept in a non central heated room. So fingers crossed it survives.

Looks very good!
(my first attempt turned very expensive wood into dust!)

I turned some green Rhus lancea many years ago.
Off the lathe and wrapped in newspaper. Hung up in an orange string bag, Changed paper daily for 2 weeks. No splitting.
Unfortunately allergic to the dust when I sanded :(
