I'm new to turning, so I'm pretty pleased with my first attempt at an egg.

Wood is a mystery pine bed post that was abandoned in the alley by a neighbour.

I will freely admit to doing plenty of sanding.

Very good. Nobody can see how you achieved the end result so it doesn't matter.
As you progress you'll be able to start sanding with a higher grit.
I use firewood to practice on.

Eggs are a great practice piece as to get a good egg shape is surprisingly difficult. Try using it for skew practice. They are also good missiles when it all goes wrong.

Looks good - was is frustrating to turn or a good experience?

There is a a dead straight line through it - was the bed post wood laminated out of smaller pieces?

Well done- as said above, an egg is a hard item to get ‘right’ even though if you look at a dozen eggs in a box they’re all different!

Apart from being good practice, it is a good ‘warm up’ item to save scrap wood for as gets you ‘in the zone’ very quickly when you get into the workshop.

Thanks for posting,

Simon
