My name on face book is not recognizable I use a pseudonym, however a local trader came in this morning requesting me to confirm friendship.

How did he do that?

Is there a search system that detects? Perhaps one of our relatives used my name with its proper spelling in the past?

Also an unknown correspondent in the USA tried.

I am not responding to any requests but will that stop intrusion?

I am no expert (one should be along soon) but facebook allows searches on a person's email address. So if you use the same email address for the trader and disgracebook they can easily locate you. Just one of the many reasons I will have nothing to do with the travesty.

I agree completely - I was invited (twice) by someone to join and I did set up a 'trial' of seven names from other forums but I was not happy with the way that the site refused to address me correctly, keept suggesting people be my 'friend' that I had never ever heard of let alone wanted contact with, and the general banality of the discussions made me decide when I got a new computer to never go there again.

I actually like Face book
I like Skype
My familly (while close) are scattered to virtually every country in the world and we use face book to keep tabs on each other
As and when we speak then we use Skype.

I really REALLY do not get why folks have a problem with face book
Friend requests......... I'm lucky if I get 1 every 6 months and then i have the option to accept or decline

There are some groups of people for whom a social network has benefits, those with widely dispersed family, members of a club with international members, the extraverts and the just plain 'I love everybody' types  I do not fit any of those groups but I was horrified to find on my 'control' group there was one member who used it to keep in touch with her familly and one of her daughters posted that she was attending an art exhibition in Cardiff, times dates and everything, now I had previously got to know her Mum on another forum, her name, telephone, physical address etc. and now I could have used that information to meet the daughter. It's a gift to all the perverts and pschos out there and I'm constantly amazed at what people post on it.

But Zuckerberg annoys me with his patronising weasel words about bringing the world together, his only interest is money and now he's sold half the company they will be reading every post and targetting advertising at you whether you like it or not. Evil little man with no morals, no respect for the millions of users, and not a jot of decency in him.

Sorry But some folks are idiots and no amount of education will ever change that

The advertising can be blocked simply enough  (hammer)

I tend to agree with you about Zuckerberg but having never met him I really would not like to comment on his scruples  (hammer) (hammer)

I do not understand the facebook operation, if I post anything does it mean only friends registered and accepted can read my post?

Or do I have to do something ?

DW,

It's your choice Woody, but the only thing I would do, if I had a 'Facebook' account, is close it.

I had a YouTube Account, but I don't upload any more. I object to all the adverts they are putting up lately, and in any case the format has changed beyond recognition. I use the account to just watch what I like, and have the facility to comment if I feel the need. But as for Facebook and all the other 'social' sites, Ta, but no ta! :)

DW - you can chose whether to make your posts public or not. I think it's in the privacy settings. You can also chose how public your profile is so it can be a 'friends only' page..

I use mine for promoting my business as you can have a 'page' as well which is just like an advertisement.

I'm not a particular fan of Facebook but in the modern age of social networking, sometimes you just have to accept these things as necessary and it's a good way for me to find out what other miniaturists are doing. I don't have any personal info on there though.
In a world of "it's not what you know but who you know" it's good to build up a network.

Best quote yet - "Remember, if you're on line and you're not buying something, it's you that's being sold!"

phil.p fantastic quote, wish I had thought of that, it's so true, I like to think that UKW is 'relatively' immune from such things but other sites are no where near as decent. You may be able to block advertising on disgusting face now but you won't be able to in the future, if you'll excuse the jargon, now they've gone public they have to 'monetise' their membership, what that means is they'll be trying much harder to target you and your life style so if you say you're getting married the computers at disgusting face HQ will pick up on that and bombard you with adverts for places where you could hold your wedding reception etc. etc. Some people might not worry about that but I find 99% of all advertising anywhere irksome and I don't want to be 'targeted' with out my consent.

Apart from UKW the only other forum I use is run by a guy who has plans to start his own 'social network' if it's as good as the forums he owns now then I might give it a go, he and I are in communication about the desirable features (Like NOT calling people 'friends' when you know absolutely nothing about them apart from their user name  )

Don't know if he'll ever get it off the ground, he doesn't have the power of the media and the 'sheep' mentality of so many that means that a 'momentum' builds up 'cos they all want to be seen as 'with it' and 'trendy' but for me the smaller it is the better, I would be mortified if anyone called me 'trendy' or 'with it'

It's actually quite difficult to 'close' your FB account, when I decided that my 'trial' had proved that it was not for me I stopped logging in, imagine my horror when I started getting e-mail notifications of new posts (Obviously I had selected 'NO e-mail notifications' when I set up the account) right at the bottom of each e-mail there was something about stopping them so I clicked on that and they have stopped now and thankfully I have a new computer so they don't know my current URL and can't track my on line activity.

I'm almost constantly reminded of this, lately:

Moral of the story, I guess, is that Phil.p's quote is a bit off - it doesn't make a blind bit of difference whether or not you're online, these days!

Well it seems that Mark Zuckerberg has really messed up the sale of half his company, only days after the IPO (Initial Public Offering) many of the large institutional shareholders are suing him, the company, Morgan Stanley, and some of the banks who assisted with the sale, alleging incorrect information in the prospectus, and the SEC (The American regulatory authority) are looking into matter as well.

A legal, financial, and regulatory nightmare for Mr. Zuckerberg :!:

Couldn't happen to nicer chap

The thing I find funny about the sale is that for weeks all you heard in the tech press was that the offer was too high and the company should only be offered at under half the sale price. But these investors still went mad and brought at what was obviously an inflated price.

Now they are being stung in their pockets they are complaining.

I wonder how many people were planning to buy, let the hype-ramp kick in, and make a quick day-trading profit.

I wonder how that worked out.
