But it does not matter what size. fill the tube with a wooden dowel, drill a pilot hole in the dowel, and fit the screw. the screw will expand the wood and grip the tube.

I assumed that you were recommending something that you had purchased yourself.

The metal handle of some of these brushes is only a piece of thin metal rolled into a cylinder rather than a seamless tube so when the plug expands, the metal unwinds and the plug falls out.
