i have taken on cutting out a few bits for a chap on a regular basis, i need decent quality pine an inch thick that will give me a good finish without splintering after my scroll saw has gone through it. Just been and bought 6 boards from a local chap but i must admit they are rubbish, so is there a name of a pine i should ask for when buying..

Redwood. It comes in several grades, Unsorted (U/S) being the best. Then Fifths (Vs). Then BQ (Building Quality).
Depending on what you are doing / making, Vs is usually reasonable.
Nixon Knowles on Queen's Drive Ind Est will sort you out.

Very nice, yes. But most timber yards are not going to have SYP, let alone be selling it as Pine!
Lovely to work, though, I'll grant you.

thanks guys, anyone have an approx cost of what i should be looking to pay for a few boards of said size x 6 ft lengths.

This is the sort of thing i am cutting out. They are only 15cm long x 10 cm high but would like good pine or poplar if its available..

If you right click on the image and copy pictures link you may find a supplier behind it. :) Champion Timber sell it as well.... Champion Timber is supplied by James Lathams the well know sheet suppliers.... :D

Have a look at the columns at the bottom of the page...

Ask for Red Pine Sideboards make great finishings. I got my last from James Donaldson Timber Ltd in Leven. Dearer but better quality if you like your knots to a minimum and not too large, others must be able to supply in your area. I do not buy it as I have not the demand so cannot give a cube cost average at present time.

A Grade Timbers in Swindon has it, or can get it.

If you're buying imported redwood then (to make a sweeping generalisation) the more northerly and/or easterly the harvesting/primary convertion operation that produced it, the better the average quality you'll get in a pack of unsorted....

Its also worthy of note that Russian material will have clears* through thirds in an unsorted pack but Scandanavian material will have clears* through fifths...

*(theoretically; in practice clears are very rare... I remember being given a 1/2 cube pack of assorted 3.3-6m, 225*50 clears to machine, with a warning that it had taken years to accumulate them, and that it was almost certainly the most valuble moulding i'd ever work with)
