Hi I know very little about electrics and could use some help, my small 6L compressor stopped working and just hums when trying to start. We took it apart to see if anything obvious was wrong with it and everything looked fine. On further inspection and pulling apart we noticed the cap was half off the capacitor at the terminal end so figure this is the problem.
I've no idea about capacitors but thought all I had to do was punch in the info on the thing and I would get a match but No such luck. The info on it is as follows: Italfarad is the make then

RP-2. 20040 SH p/)
UF 20 +/- 5%

450v C25/085/21
400v B25/085/21

I have no idea if this is a start capacitor or a start/Run it has 2 wires connected to it. Any help or info will be greatly appreciated thanks.

Looks like a 20uF (20 micro farad) 450V AC (the difference in the voltages are the life rating at those working voltages)
A replacement with these ratings will be fine. Best to find one with similar or same mechanical profile so it fits easier.

If in doubt always fit one that is Run rated. (Continuous use as opposed to a few seconds required for start)

Thanks for reply I think I have found the same rated capacitor on the bay but it has 4 terminals would this be ok if I just put 1 spade each side?

Thanks for the help folks, I got the 4 pronged capacitor
And it has saved the compressor from the skip.
It seems to be running fine now so for £4.50 it was well worth a try.
