I think if he had a toggle clamp or two on the far side of his slide to stop the piece rotating during a cut it would be safe enough. Also if he had a riving knife it would be even better! I have definitely seen worse - like someone making a bowling ball using his table saw!
 
Maybe it's just me but I can't see what is dangerous about that.
Doesn't look any worse than using a straightforward crosscut sled.

I think it's a smart solution.
 
The potential problem is that if the wood were to pivot part way through the cut it has a real chance of pinching the blade and causing kick-back. Hence my solution of using the toggle clamps.
