Chip extraction quietly.

I have that one, and a bench top thicknesser among other dust producing tools.
The dust extractor is up to the job, and its almost as noisy as the thicknesser, but not quite.
I built a noise reducing cabinet for it and its down from ear splitting to a mildly irritating whine.
Shame I cant put the thicknesser in a cabinet as well.

That thing will fill up so fast, like every 5mins if you do some serious planing.
Also- you can make a cabinet where you place it inside to make it less noisy,
however my extractor is MORE noisy than my metabo 260 planer.

It holds 50 litres. Thats a lot of chips for a hobbyist smoothing the occasional plank. Its nothing at all for a tradesman installing decking.
I have a cyclone inline, over a 20 litre tub. That only needs emptying every few weeks with my usage.

Thanks for the replies, most useful.
Size I'm not to worried about, just accept it will need emptying when in use.
Noise is my main concern, working in a integral garage, in a quiet road.
Are any other types of chip extractor generally quieter?
I've listened to a Numatic/Axminster one http://www.axminster.co.uk/numatic-nvd7 ... r-ax782721 very nice, but out of my price league.

I really dont understand your fears about extractor noise. A thicknesser or planer will drown out ANY extraction system noise.

Its the combination of both together!
I've a project coming up, that is going to need multiple passes, in oak.
I fear that a couple of days of thicknesser and extractor roaring, will be to much for not only the household, but the street as well.
It was bad enough doing a smaller project, with an electric planer and vacuum cleaner.

The dust extractor can be put inside an MDF box lined with old blankets, papier mache egg trays, or equipment case foam, all of them significantly reduce the noise. Mine is now barely louder than my bandsaw cutting wood.
The planer... nothing you can do about that except insulate the garage.

Or you can just wear a paper suit and earphones and forego the extraction.

I presume the MDF box is vented, to allow the sucked in air, to escape, via a baffle arrangement.
Me in a paper suit............!

All noise is air speed. Reduce the air speed = reduce the noise.

Put the extractor in a solid box, with a vent that is baffled and loosely padded, making sure the outlet is very big.
No noise, no heat. Job done.

Without an extractor, the chips and dust will coat you an inch thick. when youre done, peel off the suit, get under the shower, and youre good to go.
Not mentioned yet in this thread, but I really hope you are using masks whenever youre making dust?
