They handle the higher frequency output best and need a subwoofer as part of a hifi system to cover all frequencys .
Look for enclosed backs to reduce fire spread and make sure you have sufficient depth to fit then.

Have you consider something like a bose system, they have tiny speakers and a seperate subwoofer. High frequency sound is directional, so you will get a better stereo sound if it is firing towards you to where you are sitting. The bass is non directional, and largely makes no difference where the subwoofer is, though close to the floor makes sense as saves transmitting too much to anybody above you. It may also save pulling up floors and routing cables as that's no fun.
