Car Help - wheel rims and headlights

I'm looking to replace the wheel rims on my Daihatsu Independent TDX as they are pretty worn and one seems to be loosing air on a regular basis.

The tyres on at present are 255/70/15 so I know I need 15" rims but it's the width of the tyre, 255, that's confusing me. Will a 225/70/15 wheel rim take a 255 wide tyre?

Also looking at improving the headlights and have come across an upgrade kit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380857684366 along with a hid kit. Anyone have any experience of these?

225 might be stretching it a bit. To make sure you get the correct size tyre you need to know the width of the wheel rim. Often the haynes manual lists a few different tyre sizes that can be used.

On my focus i have the standard 6.5 x 15 wheels. Which allowed me to go from the 195/55/15 to 195/50 as they were actually cheaper

can you put some callipers on your existing rims to see if these figures tally?

Oh and btw, HID kits are illegal and dangerous (not to mention next to useless) to retro-fit UNLESS you replace the whole lamp unit for one with a reflector designed for HID bulbs.

Not forgetting the fact that they are also an MOT fail unless the car has headlamp levelling or headlight washers fitted as per section 1.7 of the test manual.

That is exactly the info I needed although it took me a bit to understand it. Didn't have to use callipers as the rims have 15x7JJ marked on them. Now just need to find out if the rims I was looking to buy are in that range you quoted.

By headlamp levelling do you mean the knob I use in the cab to adjust the headlamp beam when I've a heavy load on the back?

Be careful changing the width of your tyres 255 to 225, as keeping the same profile (70) will affect the overall size of the trye diameter.
If you do change to 225 you need a 80 profile

If you use the following calculator you'll see the diameter is only 3mm different between 255/70 and 225/80....then put in 225/70 and you'll see a 42mm difference, which will then affect your speedo reading

He was asking if a 255 tyre would fit on a rim designed for a 225 tyre :mrgreen:

In any case, a 225 tyre sits on a 6.5J whereas a 255 sits on a 7J. So the answer would be NO.

I wasn't sure if he'd seen a set of wheels complete with 225/70 tyres.

I did read it several times as I've only ever known wheel width measured in inches and not as the tyre width.

Anyway, hopefully the link might help him understand tyre sizes a bit more

It's not just the rim size you have worry about it's also the shape of the wheel as I found to my cost?

I bought a set of S/H winter wheels and tyres from the previous X3 model. They wouldn't clear the brake discs of my newer model.

Yesterday I had to swerve to avoid an idiot, who looked straight at me, and then with a look of real contempt, entered the island from my left, and crossed my 'bows'. My front wheel went over the kerb and dinged a two month old tyre, causing a bulge, which of course wrote off the tyre. What he doesn't know is I see him quite often around the estate. The smug faced, selfish Bar Steward. Ahhh the joys of motoring eh?

Correct, when changing wheels you need to know the offset, spigot diameter, rim width and overall diameter. With regards to light commercials and 4x4s you need to know if they have the correct rating for the size and weight of the vehicle.

That's when a dashcam is worth its weight in gold.
It's surprising how attitudes change when a dashcam is noticed, rather like the driving standards whilst following a police car, & a quiet 'Ok, I'll just send the video to my insurance company' tends to turn all the bravado into fluster.

Mine is similar to the above & cost £20+ a couple of years ago. Needs a memory card (SD or a micro SD with adaptor). When the card is full the recording overwrites those at the beginning. Has own internal battery or can be powered from the cigarette lighter (I refuse to call it a power port or whatever).

Now does anyone have any advice on couriers as I have to arrange the collection?

Ask the seller to pallet them up if possible, wrapping each wheel with copious amounts of bubble wrap. The wheels should then be tied to the pallet using nylon pallet banding. Wrap that over with corrugated card, add a 'do not stack on top' label, address it and it's ready for collection. Th

£13 for a Dashcam with free postage - that seems incredibly cheap - the ones I've read about in the past cost about £80!

What's the resolution like Robbo ?
