I'm completely new to woodworking and was wondering if anyone has any tips on where to buy the materials I need for my first little project?

I need beech, roughly about 2m/sqr should see me through with ease.

The trouble is it's so expensive to buy online, and I'm not sure if local timber yards would be any cheaper.

Can anybody give an tips or advice?

Not quite on your doorstep but there is Richard Potter and Nantwich. Last time I went they were quite happy for me to wander around the yard and select my own timber. I'd give them a ring to check for stock before going.

Not allowed to wander around Richard Potter's yard any more. You are now confined to the shop whilst they get your timber.
Was there a couple of weeks ago.
They now recommend you phone them first with a cutting list.
