After a recent heart bypass operation I am gradually getting back to the shed  . I have been turning some small items like trinket boxes and candlesticks but yesterday I decided it was time to be a bit more ambitious. I dug out an Elm Burr and mounted it on the lathe. I turned the outside to the shape I wanted I then started hollowing and got a bit too ambitious. Here is the result

What really annoys me is that I made a laser guided hollowing tool exactly for this type of work and was too lazy to set it up. Lesson learned

Oh dear. We've all done it, although as you say - lesson learned. I had a table top come apart on me last week, so no criticism here. :?
Glad you're fighting back after your surgery.

I know it is considered fashionable but I don't really like thin turnings. Much prefer the rustic chunky things. Even though i get criticised for being too "amateurish". Don't like the feel.

I feel for your loss of a lovely bit of wood. but no matter, you are on the mend and that is the important thing.

Could you save it? Flatten off the bottom of the broken-off top, then glue it to a bowl or platter in contrasting wood for a two-tone piece?

I had a look at it today and am thinking of turning it upside down and flattening what will now be the top. I will then make a cup from the bottom part, there is enough wood on it for that. If I do it as I envisage it will look as if is all one piece. Of course, I will need to finish the inside better since the top opening will be wide. Will let you know how I get on.

Bad luck on the two things know how it is been and done both (By-pass and going through the side).
Not much can be done with the burr except maybe as you have already said. I quite often just put it to one side and as I am making different pieces use it to highlight something.
