Among the hundreds of bits I have picked up this year here are a few I got while on me hols in Norfolk 8)
"Boot-ful"/Norfolk, get it :?:

Vintage BRADES beach spade.

Pattern makers shave.

Selection of rope/sail workers gear.

Marples chisel oddity?

Cast iron/brass level with cupid bow side window.

Very intricate calliper??

Hi Andy

I have a E Preston square like that one.

Has the Marples chisel been repurposed in to a screwdriver?

Pete

That's an unusual calliper. Is it designed so you can measure a wide gap concealed behind a smaller one? I imagine you could thread the heads through a hole, adjust the screw to the measurement, then squeeze the legs together, withdraw the heads through the hole, let the spring pull the screw back to the stop and then read off the size. Much easier to do than to describe!

I think the Marples chisel could be a spade pattern carving tool - page 3 in the big catalogue:

That is a nice caliper. Looking closely it looks like one of the points has a tiny knurled wheel for zeroing the measurement, and the other pin slides and operates the pointer for the fine measurement scale.

Looks like it might be useful for getting the depth of the groove for an internal circlip correct, or something like that ?

To me it looks a lot like a production gauge, that can be set to a size, and will then read how accurately a part has been made.

Note the "+ -" markings on the little sub-scale.

I would like to withdraw my previous guess about the gauge and line up behind the Sage of Suffolk!

Wonder what happened to that Brades beach spade I had 65 years ago.........................?
Nice haul, mate.

It increased in value for sure Dick
Best dig it out

For its age this one is in wonderful condition and its strength in construction shows why it is still here and mine would bend and break

No Pete it is still a chisel and well sharp at that...Cheers for the pic Andy (how far you off having every page on the "bucket"?)
Got a few of those squares now and most of them have the same decoration on the stock.

Andy

As for the gauge I think it may have been user/toolshop made.
The pivot for the main scale is in the middle of the tool but the fine scale reads from a pivot in the bulge under the top anvil making it very sensitive indeed

Alas there were no bootsales involved in this little harvest but a good time was had hunting it out, including a visit to the "Prickwillow festival of the plough" where, the oiler/square lots came from for less than a tenner :D 8)

Also picked up some nice old trade catalogues and an 1880 "Book on building, civil and ecclesiastical, including church restoration"......

The whole catalogue is on Gary Roberts' site here: http://toolemera.com/Trade Catalogs/tradecatalogs193.html
but where relevant I will take a snap of the page or extract a bit from the pdf to illustrate an answer.
The downloadable version is a bit of a compromise between image quality and file size, so if anyone wants a clearer image of an odd page or two, just ask.

[And, as BugBear spotted, I messed up the index; I've sent Gary the misssing pages but I think he's a bit like me for getting round to things all in good time...]
