Has anyone got a lathe that can handle this twig ? .

probably not as long as you think. There was a video clip on a few weeks ago about harvesting Californian redwoods, "back in the day". IIRC they somehow hooked the saws up to tractors, and it cut reasonably quickly.
 
i think that The Borrowers make it seem bigger than it really is.

But Mark, this is a horizontal sideways cut!!!! and have you seen how straight the cut is?

there was an article i looked at whilst searching for the video file that i mentioned and that was 893 years old, and vaguely similar in size. Assuming it is a Giant Redwood.
