I think I'm ok there, it's an old bike, the brake cable runs on top of the top tube and the derailleur shifters are on the down tube

hopefully I can get it to look as good as the pics

following on from this, is there such a thing as hardwood furniture board?

I don't have a biscuit jointer to make the top and bottom from hardwood planks

Also which hardwoods would be suitable?

Something easy to work with but strong

thanks

Not needed - just make a freshly planed butt joint. Biscuits are not needed, modern glues are easily stronger than the wood.

Actually old glues are also stronger than the wood when used correctly.

One of the joinery grade mahoganies - sapele or similar. Bit of dark stain before the final varnish or oil, and it'll look fine.

This is one I knocked up some six months ago. Been supporting my son bike for all that time. All angles cut on saw bench, joined with biscuits. It took me longer to do the finish coating that to construct. Made from Douglas Fir.
