Has anybody got any experience of these chucks?

What I want to know is, do these get clogged up at the back where the chuck key fits and is there any dust ingress with them having no back plate?

Andy

I have a goliath built on the same principle, never a problem, just give it a brush down as and when I clean up the headstock dust when in use.

No problem at all. Great little chuck. The toothed ring that the key locks into wore on mine but a call to Axminster and about a tenner later and I had a replacement, dead easy to change. This was after about 7 years of professional use, so not exactly a weak point.

I started with one K10 in January and now have three plus a Goliath. No problems whatsoever.

I don't have any experience of these, but I asked around before buying a chuck and was told by a few guys that the toothed key type were not as good - issues with wear and not being able to tighten the work fully. So I bit the bullet and bought the Axminster evolution at £160 !!

Then not long afterwards they reduced the prices to about £50 - had I known I certainly would have bought one and put up with any issues, but since I already had the evolution I thought to spend the money on jaws instead. I can recommend the evolution - if you're willing to spend the extra.

However I know there are loads of people with the K80 and K100.

Hi K,
I think you are right about the potential wear issues on the K8 and K10 chucks but the nice thing about Axminster is that they seem to be very committed to that chuck format (sadly not so the Goliath) and as Richard has said you can buy replacement scrolls and there are also keys in the catalogue, all for a few quid each. So this isn't so much of an issue TBH.

One thing no one has mentioned yet is that the new K8 and K10 chucks will be even better than the older nickel plated ones because they're now machined from solid stainless steel. This is a huge advantage for anyone in a less than perfectly dry workshop and will also lead to better precision.
