I've seen a silver soldered (or was it brazed, can't remember) repair of an old handplane, turned out well. The other way to weld cast iron is to go slooow, only a little at a time so the metal doesn't heat up. That was how one of my cast iron induction motors was repaired.

A suitable replacement has been procured. Seems to be a bit of a Frankenplane; Woden, with Record lever cap & back iron and a Stanley blade: but I needed a 'user' and it works well, so I don't care.

Never having handled a Woden before, I've had my anorak on and discovered that this appears to be a Wednesbury-made example, circa 1956 with the above mentioned bits having been replaced. Woden were taken over by Record in 1961 and produced Woden/Record planes in Sheffield until 1965.

Anyway, I'm back up and running again with a decent British tool.
