Hey everybody,
What are the average wood prices for oak and pine in cubic meters, also do you know any timber merchant around or in London that offer good prices?

Do you have a sectional size in mind for sokid timber, or (given you specified sq m) a type of engineered flooring product.

Timber is usually sold by the length for a given sectional size; or by the cubic meter for a given size (or selection of sizes).

Also, by pine do you mean european redwood, european whitewood, or a timber of a specific species or area ie southern yellow pine or red pine...

10 cubic feet means only 28 cubic centimeters isnt it?

there are also a lot of variables- wayney edged, square edged, pippy, character grade, rustic, prime, brown and that is just the oak.

For example i want to design my own garden table with seats attached H81, W153, L200cm what kind of materials would you recommend and what are the costs i should look at for making it?

If you are thinking of the typical "pub" picnic table in oak it will weigh a ton, you would need to use stainless steel bolts and screws although you could get away with using some local green oak rather than 1st grade kiln dried Oak. or then you could make it in some sort of preasure treated pine/softwood from the builders merchants, ready planed and corners rounded.

I m looking to build it from scratch using 200x200 or 300x300 squares but i saw that this kind of table is sold with 120£-130£ and after a quick calculation i`ll pay somewhere around 100£ to make it...where is the deal in making this kind of furniture for a profit?

P.S. The price is for using pine/softwood.

Bulk buying timber by the manufacturers, ie buying thousands of lengths of timber at a time. That will bring the cost down. Plus if they have their own machining facilities ie 4 sided planer etc they can buy sawn timbers straight from the mill at a cheaper rate, then process the timber themselves.

You will never compete on a profit basis at the cheap end of the market. :)

Hi George,
Money can be made. It's just about finding the right materials, suppliers, design and your target customers. Using 8"x8" timber (am I correct in thinking thats your dimensions?) is very chunky stuff, which will cost a bomb! Which is good if you're not planning on making many as it will appeal to the higher end of the market who want something bespoke. But if you want to make something which you can reproduce and sell many of you should consider using cheaper timber. Softwood 3x2...

You will make more money for bespoke items designed to customer specifications, than you would for normal repititive items that come as standard. However, the same applies to the rate of custom you would see. Less customers for more bespoke. More customers for less customisation.

i intrpretted the design as using 200 or 300mm lengths of timber to make squares- like on parquet flooring but larger
