I haven't posted for a while but here is a pic of my AV stand:

Rack.jpg

The sides are solid ash and the shelves ash faced MDF lipped with solid ash. I made it adjustable and made a couple of spare shelves because I'm always changing things.

very impressive cinema room!!!!

Is that the subwoofer in the corner??.

Thanks,

Yes the big box in the corner is the sub - also home made, based on the BK Monolith. I need to make a case for the amplifier that drives it next.

Cheers

Double Wow, nice room and nice stand, i like the design and the adjustable shelves idea.

Well done

Woody.

Hi Mike

I like that. A lot.

Do you have any further details on the sub construction. I've been thinking about doing something similair myself (but on a smaller scale - 1 x 10" unit).

Do you have any filter controls on the sub to avoid boom etc?

Cheers

Where to start...

This is going to be completely off topic but hopefully no-one will mind too much.

I based mine on this thing: http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/Sub_Woofers/monolith-df.htm and with that in mind, I bought the drive unit and port from them.

I used a package called WinISD: http://www.linearteam.dk/ to do all the cabinet design. This works out what cabinet volume and port combination match the Thiele-Small parameters for the driver to give the best response. The thing about the monolith is that they have extended the response much further by increasing the box volume so that it is effect flat down to about 20Hz. Unfortunately this does mean it is a great big box.

Once you have the cabinet volume it is just a matter of trying to work out a box size that is reasonably pleasing to the eye and in my case fits through the loft hatch.

BK do make a smaller sub based on a 10" driver: http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/Sub_Woofers/ ... FandFF.htm and I found them to be very helpful so they will probably sell you bits you need to build a copy of that one. They are a well respected company and do make good gear.

There is loads of information about all things AV here: http://www.avforums.com/forums/index.php so it is well worth a read.

As for equalisation, you will almost definitely need something. I use one of these: http://www.behringer.com/FBQ2496/?lang=ENG in conjunction with a microphone and this software: http://www.hometheatershack.com/roomeq/ to analyse the in room response. The software then calculates all the parameters for the equaliser and can even set it up automatically via a MIDI interface if needed. You need to register on teh site which is free and then you can download the software which is also free.

Amplifier-wise, you can go for one of the BK plate amps: http://www.bkelec.com/Modules/Sub_Bass.htm but I just went for a basic 300W power amp: http://www.bkelec.com/Modules/Amplifiers.htm and rely on the clever electronics in the amp and the equaliser to drive the sub properly.

If you thought that tool collecting was a slippery slope, it is as but nothing compared to AV!

Good luck and if there is any help you need, please just ask.

Cheers
Mike
