Heading to the FFX Toolshow next week at Bluewater, and they mainly have trade/site tools there. I'm in need of buying a few handsaws to add to my beginner workshop and wondered if there are any modern saws worth having? Any opinions gratefully received.

All tools are a personal choice as to what is best etc.
personally, i get on really well with Bahco Sandvic saws, get the right tooth per inch, for the job, cross cut or rip.
I have cut many compound mitre's on 9" hip rafter's accurate to a *** paper, which i put down to being probably 75% the Sandvic saw and 25% me!
I have been using an Irwin lately, which was quite good, as my dealer was out of Sandvics,(I always keep 2, brand new, in the van, 'cos you never know when its needed).
Regards Rodders

Bahco 244, 244 Fine and 244+ Barracuda all have a place in my workshop. excellent saws that IME stay sharp so muhc longer than the Irwin/Jack crap.

Having said that, I picked up a pair of S&J Predator saws from GAP yesterday on offer, £6 +VAT for the pair. One's the 8ppi Universal and the other's the 14ppi Plastics saw. Apart from the handles being a little square edged and not as comfortable as the Bahco, they seem a good saw.

Now you are in brum, if you are ever out towards sheldon way. Pop into Toolman on the A45 heading towards the airport. Cheapest place i know for saws and other tools. :)

I've tried hardpoints from Irwin, Spear & Jackson and Bahco, but my favourite is still a Stanley Fatmax fine finish saw; in my experience it cuts faster and cleaner than the others.

Toolman at Sheldon? I know it well. They used to be dirt cheap on everything. When I bought my Stanley #5 Jack it was from there, about 15 years ago. It was half the price of anywhere else, only cost me £22.

Yep that's the one, great little place and still going strong. :)

Get a Stanley 'finecut' jet cut. The blokes on site will probably laugh for a while but you'll cut the cleanest joints they've seen !

Yep, Bacho are a first choice although I did buy a fine cut "Jack" from Wickes for £8.00 and I was very pleased with it. I think it's an Irwin saw wit the Wickes branding?

I picked up a Bahco interchangeable handle and some blades from the Amazon outlet site - can't for the life of me remember Bahco's name for the product line. It's a really comfortable handle which accepts a number of blades. I've got the large RH handle, and normally take a size 10 glove, it really is the most comfortable handle I've used with the real benefit that I can fit the equivalent of half a dozen saws in my toolbox. And, for any south paws among us you can buy a left handed grip.

Just found a link: http://www.its.co.uk/pd/EX-244P-22-Bahc ... 244P22.htm it looks like for the most part the blade is the same price as the plastic handled equivalent, so you're paying a £10-15 premium for the handle to buy into their system, as I said worth it for me for space considerations, the comfy handle is a bonus.

The Jetcut type teeth work pretty good. I've had both Stanley and the Bahco. I think the Stanley are better but TBH there was a year or so between using the two types, so it could be a false recollection. Ultimately you will spend more on these types of saws than buying one that can be resharpened though. Try and avoid the Nails in old/recycled timber!

I've been suggesting that such a thing should be made for years - nice to see it's happened.
