Any shed builders in?

Ideally I'd like a shed this summer.

I can buy a 10 foot by 8 for £500 plus delivery. Surely I could make one for less?

For any of you who have built them before, how much would you expect the materials for something that size to cost? Nothing fancy, just your standard garden shed.

Any tips on building one?

If you pay retail for the "makings" it will probably cost you close to what you can buy it for.

It would be probably be difficult to buy the materials cheaper than an off the shelf budget shed, but you could make a very solid shed for not much more. If you look at prices for proper heavy duty sheds you may find pricing is closer to the £2k mark.

Will have exact figure for timber written down but think it was a bit less than £500. 2" X 3" CLS frame and red pine cladding. Just made four stud partitions and screwed them together in situ.

I looked at sheds cheap and expensive. Looked at a his and hers . Then bit the bullet . Yeah will cost me couple of grand probably close to 3k. But is built stronger than some houses. I did it. And will transform into what is needed over the years.
Shed and workshop. Then brewery pub
Home office if needed .

Depends on your needs we all have different needs.
I used the 3 x 2s and 22mm cladding.
Fully insulated .

I built a 13 x 12 ft shed for swmbo last year
Out of reclaimed 4" sq timbers > £150
bought log lap cladding 38mm thick > £ 600
Roof was 3 layers of reclaimed 10mm ply > £75
had the roof done felted profesionally > £ 350
i'm sure it cost more than £2k with everything electrics alarm hardware locks etc

This one is 12' x 8' cost me £1,300 to build. It would have been £300 less with a felted roof rather than cedar shingles, but SWMBO can see it from the kitchen window and didn't want an eyesore! A similar size from one of the DIY sheds may have been less, but nowhere near as robust.

I have just started to build one for my GF to use as a painting studio. She paints large paintings and needs to get far back from them so we decided on a size of 20' by 14' with a sloping roof of 9' to 7'. (Metric sizes, 6m by 4.25m at 2.8m to 2.2m high).

Off the shelf sheds would have cost nearly £4k+ so wasn't an option so we decided to build one.

It will be made of 2x4 studwork with 18mm OSB3 for the base (on 2x4 beams on 16" center supported by 3x 4x4" skids), 9mm OSB3 for the walls and 12mm OSB3 for the roof. The whole shed will be insulated and wrapped in a roofing membrane before being clad with Shiplap. It is a big job but I reckon I can get a wind and watertight structure for £1k and fully finished for just under £2k.

I really enjoyed reading that old thread. My wife wants me to build her a tool shed, well actually I want to build her one so that I can get the gardening equipment out of the garage so I can use the space to enlarge my work area.
