I know slightly less than nothing about electrickery so can anyone help?

My circular saw which is 2300W in 240v form (no figures given for 110v, which is what it is), has worked well on one 110v transformer, but has had issues on my other transformer. I know the good transformer is 3 kVA and thought the other was too (the label's fell off :shock: ).

On the "dodgy" supply it can run at a very slow speed, like a tick-over and didn't respond to speed control, but this is sort of intermittent. Is it possible this is only a 2.5 kVA unit and at it's limit? The transformer didn't cut out.

Nothing else seems to overload the transformer though I think this saw has the highest power of all my tools (has anyone noticed that no-one seems to give power ratings on tools any more? :roll: ) I've never had issues with this transformer before, even when using both outlets at the same time.
 
Not by any chance a bad plug contact problem by any chance, just a combination of worst case problems between pins and socket fingers.
 
If it's any help the wattage should be the same on the 230v and the 110v versions - the current will be different though ( just over double on the 110v).

It could well be that the less effective transformer is optimistically rated.

Where I've been able to find out I've noticed that a lot of 110v tools have a lower power rating than the 240v equivalent, don't know why, maybe the current draw is a limiting factor on certain components.
 
Pop the top off and check all connections anyway.
It's possible the transformer is not man enough or the transformer is to far away from the mains supply.
Output of transformer needs to be bigger than demand of tool used.
