Rather than usurp Woodyturner's recent thread, I thought I would start another. So, here is one I finished last night.

Had great fun turning it, but some of the fibres were obviously not as good as I thought and have picked out during the buffing process (i.e. too late to remount and turn to remove damage). However, the timber is lovely. Bowl is about 340mm in diameter and 60mm tall. Finished with microcrystalline wax. This piece was the first turned from a tree trunk that I acquired two years ago and was felled in about 2008; I have about 20 or so hopefully similar pieces sitting under my car port, just waiting for me to get at them.

As always, comments welcome (good or bad!).

That is a lovely bit of wood indeed! Lucky you! Nice turning too.

Looks great Mike, like that a lot.

Must try the micro' wax on my spalted beech stuff, everything else I've tried seems to darken the timber and lower the contrast between the light and dark areas, but you seem to have managed to get it just right :)

Cheers, Paul

I used a cellulose sanding sealer after sanding to 600 grit. This seemed to darken the wood quite a bit, so I re-sanded with 600, and this helped to bring back the colour contrast a bit. I also only used a tiny amount of wax for the same reason.
