Rob - I have virtually relegated all my other chisels to the back drawer since acquiring my little Japanese parer.

I was browsing through the selection at Axminster yesterday...THIS IS NOT A GOOD SIGN!!! :D :D :D

I am sold on these...definitely!

Jim
Agreed Jim...I would pay a visit to Dr Matthew. I know from experience that he's got the cure for this sort of disease...it involves dipping in the back pocket to extract the wallet   - Rob

Oh I don't need a diagnosis Rob...I have had specialist examination and it's incurable I'm afraid...

And Tom....you have the same problem, I can tell!! :D PLUS you have a collection already and you could have warned us earlier....we could have prevented this disease before it became serious! :D :D

Jim

I'm fully gone Jim. Not just chisels. Machinery!

Don't worry Tom, those AI chisels are fantastic - and they don't take as much flattening/prep work as these Jap ones seem to need. My reputation couldn't take several hours of flattening, Mrs IB has already accused me of cracking one off in the garage when she's appeared behind me whilst honing chisels on the stones

Just to play devil's advocate and rather late in the day, would you consider the more expensive Lie-Neilson bevel edge socket chisels which I have come to love? They don't seem so prohibitive when you buy them individually just when you need them and in my experience their quality is wonderful.
Just a thought.
Simon

Another vote for the L-N's. Been using them daily for many years - comfortable, take a good edge and can take a considerable beating without showing it.
Cheers
Philly :D

I've just sold a complete set of LN's, IB has my old 25mm. The A2 LN's as Philly rightly says are excellent day to day bench chisels, but they won't take and hold the same sort of edge as a Jap chisel.
My problem is that I had a set of the Axminster Ice Bear jap chisel which I really didn't know what to do with...and I ruined them   (long story) but I do recollect the edge  that could be obtained which was a bit of a revelation. After that sad experience I got hold of some LN's which were very good.

Jim's thread on his parer re-opened an old wound that I thought had healed so when Dr Matthew sent me two of his finest to play with...the rest is history.

Jap chisels are very good value considering that the better ones are hand forged but the standard Orie Nomi's aren't suitable for dovetails...so you need a set of specialist d/t chisels which bumps up the overall cost.
Then of course it's nice  to have a set (or four in my case) of parers.

I still keep going back to the two that Matthew sent me and testing the edge...unbelievable  - Rob

Received my replacement chisel from Matthew today :) so it's kudos to him for his commitment to his customers.
