Hello everyone! First post here..

I've scoured the internet for images/information but can't find a thing!

Basically I purchased (for not much £) some Marples (Record) NOS Bevel Edge chisels from a local chap who runs one of those small tool shops. They sharpen well and work wonderfully but appearance wise they are nothing like any Marples I've seen before. The cosmetic differences are, a black ring instead of a white one and the handle itself has no reference to Marples on it at all, only one of those little 'wear eye protection' symbols.

Pictures are attached, you can see the packaging they came in too! I'm unsure if they are genuine or repacked years ago basically!

Any insight would be greatly appreciated,

Elliott

Hello and Welcome.

Quite a bargain , well done.

Look genuine to me but I haven't seen one like your blue Marples before.

More common is clear yellow resin like my I.Sorby one here.

The use of blue poly instead of Cellulose acetate (rhubarb & custard) is a cost saving exercise, so is omitting the hot foil stamping of the logo
I think these were quite late in Records history before the American owners closed UK production

The Marples "Blue Chip" range has been a mainstay of affordable chisel-hood for
decades - Ian Kirby features them quite prominently in his books.

But they've always carried clear branding, not just the colour blue (think of all the yellow
tools that aren't Stanley...).

What's the little logo on the butt
of the handle - can you do a close up?

I picked up a set (1/4, 1/2, 3/4 & 1) of "Greenlee" chisels a few years back at an antique mall, cost of all $15 US). For all practical purposes the chisels are identical to the vintage blue Record/Marples, except for the handles being green instead of blue. Same white spacer, same style of handle imprint.

For practical purposes the only chisel used was the 3/4 (and very badly at that!). New grind and honing and it has become a permanent resident on my bench!

Hey bugbear!

It's basically just the H&S eye protection logo like this:
