I have recently purchased this lathe and a used set of Rob Sorby chisels. I need advice please on what is a good reasonably priced chuck and also a recommended jig for sharpening chisels ; any advice appreciated , budget a little restricted at the moment
thanks,

I am not sure why you have not had any replies. Usually forums have more opinions than members.

The DMS900, from what I can determine has a M30 x 3.5mm thread. The popular chucks with that thread are Axminster SK100 & SK114, Record Power SuperNova2, Toolpost Versa Chuck and R. Sorby Patriot.

I have the SK100, SuperNova and VersaChuck. I find the range of jaws from Axminster cover most options but the chuck key for the SK100 is not as handy as the others. The body of the VersaChuck is double the length and weight of the others but can be ordered to take Axminster jaws. All of them work and I would buy again (preferably at the price I paid 10 years ago.

The only way to lower the price is to buy a M33x3.5mm to 8x1" Adaptor and look at the 80mm range of chucks.

If you want a budget restricted sharpening system see http://www.aroundthewoods.com/sharpening01.html

...

I would imagine that it is possibly because Trev's lathe is not one of the usual suspects so threadwise is an unknown quantity for most folk.
Any of the chucks supplied by the likes of (in no particular order) Axminster, rutlands, toolpost, peter childs et al will do the job, you just need to make sure that you get the correct thread to fit your lathe and that you can get additional jaws should they be required.

Hi guys,
thanks for the replies my lathe has and I quote

...Fitted with the industry standard 1“ x 8 tpi main spindle, there will never be a need to worry about sourcing a wide range of accessories.

so given your suggestions I will go seek parts,

thanks,

again,

Trev
