advice please best way to remove staple ends

hi folks just found a wonderful piece of old 1/4 saw oak about 25 mm thick

however some one has put 1/2 a dozen staples in all the way down which have rusted way just leaving the ends embedded in the oak

so the question what's the best way to remove the staple ends

Grab them with a pair of pliers and pull?

tried that the staples as only about .05 of a mm above the surface. the oak has also contracted around the staples and the will not budge they just snap off.

Can you dig them out a little bit? Around them to get a bet grip?
