Advice on Finishing an Oak Staircase

Can anyone advise on a suitable finish for an oak staircase.

I did one last year and did it with sanding sealer and outside quilty polish, I and the customer was very happy with it.
A friend of mine also used some poly on his pine one, so a long as you make sure that you sand well between coats you should get a good finish.
