Advice for false ceiling beams.

I am thinking of putting false beams in my bedroom, but have never done this before. Any advice on wood type or anything i should consider?

I'm only after a lightweight wood as it's only for effect. It will most likely stained dark, however i'd like some grain to show if poss.

just some 3x2 take an axe to it and then give it 3 coats of a very dark stain/varnish
cheaper than oak but not as good
