...compatible with iMac.

My internal drive has given up the ghost and as a new one is prohibitively expensive, external seems the right way to go.

TIA

Hi Roger
I've not tried it on my Mac, but I have a bog standard LG Super-Multi on my PC (Ext USB) and I do all my Masters on it. Until I got my tower duplicator I did all my duplications on it, too. Never had cause to complain.

The Amazon Basics USB 2 external drive was recommended the other day on a blog I read; tbh I think they're such a commodity item now it'd be hard to find a bad one. I have an old unbranded FireWire drive that I use occasionally that's been 100% reliable.

I use a 1Tb Iomega one I bought a few yrs ago at a ridiculous price - you just need to format it for the Mac.

You're right, Steve.

Peter...I agree in principle, just that I started looking at customer reviews. Surprisingly there seemed to be quite a spread between 5 and 1 star. I read some of the 1 star reviews to see what the issues were but found it quite hard to distinguish between 'operator error' and the actual drive. There really are some plonkers out there.

Oops, sorry a senior moment.

Apple do them - I was complaining to them in their store that the latest MacBooks don't have an internal drive.
The response was that most people now use broadband but an external drive is available - I didn't ask the price though as I was in the States?

Yep, no argument there. At least with Amazon you now you can buy one and return it without any fuss if it doesn't work out for you, though ;)
