Windows 8 has a refresh option that restores core files but keeps your personal stuff. Go into setup and you should find the option :)

First off, when you say it won't start, I assume it gets to Windows then freezes of crashes.

When you say you cannot restore, does that mean you have tried to restore and it failed, or you don't know how to get to restore?

There is an option of reinstalling without loosing your data With Win 8.1, press shift when you start or restart and you will get a menu, if you go to advanced you will have an option to reinstal, if you choose this, you will have an option to reinstall and retain the user data (it's put into a separate folder to keep it safe during reinstall). If you haven't been able to find system restore, this is also where you will find it.

You will also here get options to start in safe mode, this will probably work to load to Windows, as graphics programmes can load their own drivers, and it is these that usually cause he problems. A safe mode load will enable you to uninstall the offending programme.

When you get it running, upgrade to Win 10 with the free upgrade offer, it's far superior to win 8.1.

Be cautious, Win 10 free update has ended, entering your win 8 key in win10 1511 download MAY activate it. Depends on whether that feature has also been terminated.
I doubt that win 10 1607. (Latest version) will allow this.

Cheers Matt only problem is it won't let me go into setup, basically I turn it on and pressed either f8 or Delete a few times and it goes to the BIOS blue screen..... I cannot find anything that says "Create System Restore Point" very annoying.
Don't press Del - that is to enter bios, which is completely independent of windows.

You need to insert your windows setup disc / USB stick and ensure that your pc is booting from that (an option in the bios if it doesn't do it straight away) :)

Win 10 free update is certainly still available for the foreseeable future, just not via the automatic updates route. You have to do it manually using the upgrade utility.

I run a repair shop and we still upgrade two or three machines a day, perfectly legitimately from Microsoft, with the genuine Microsoft upgrade utility or a DVD of Win 10, to win 10 ver 1607. works on win 7. 8 and 8.1 every time.

That's good to know, (that it is still available) I've only updated 3 machines from downloaded ISO and USB image due to failed hard drives and a MB problem, not my favoured occupation these days and had seen discussion some time ago on MSDN about how long the facility was likely to be available.

I guess it's in most individuals interest to have the latest version installed and not have to cover legacy software problems.

From talk within the industry I think you are spot on. They hit 350 million upgrades, but really would like all Win 7 and 8 machines running on the single platform. There would be no incentive to buy if you are happy with a legacy operating system, but feel consumers may still drift over to 10 if left as a free option.

The vast majority of sales anyways would be on new computers with volume licences or shop bought OEM versions installed on new kit. To not offer the free upgrade to existing users would just eliminate the people they really want to move off older systems.

Ver 1607 really is the best yet. (dare I say better than Win 7)?

Probably a bit premature.

As a past user of most versions of Windows from 3.11 to 7 it's fair to say that it can take quite a few years for the general consensus to conclude that a particular version was rubbish. 7 is doing pretty well and XP has been regarded by many as hard to beat. In the words of the support guys where I use to work the others were complete crap. Whether the current versions of 10 turn out to be good or bad remains to be seen.

Tend to agree, and the developing ability to run native Linux files via Ubuntu App for development systems should help some folk writing for portable market.
No more need for dual booting.

Only seen it working in command line myself.

Hi,
I have managed to get access to my files on the PC and I'm copying as many of my important photos/documents/files as possible to a separate harddrive as although the PC is on the fan is running at full speed all the time so obviously a fault with the hardware and as soon as the files are copied I will take to the computer shop to be fixed..... fingers crossed it will last until I have all my Intarsia patterns copied.
Thanks for your help and will keep ya posted on what they find wrong.
Cheers
Brian

Ok, if the fan is running all the time, you may be over heating the CPU, this can cause crashes. Computer fans have a tendency to clog up with dust etc. So get a vacuum and clean the fan and heat sink.

Or better yet, give it a blast with the compressor if you have one
+1 on the air line and blow gun, set to 30psi ish but have a moisture filter in line if possible.

We run three moisture traps on the single airline to ensure no moisture is blown into computers. First often produces liquid, second one rarely does and third on never.

The HP DV6 series are well known for blocking their fans.

another +1 for giving the innards a good blow out - I've recovered many a PC that wouldn't boot just by doing this alone - they really are quite temperamental like that.

If you know someone with a compresssor but who doesn't have a triple moisture trap setup - still use it, but then let the pc sit unconnected to ANYTHING for as long as you can - a day at least with the sides off and a warm room - or an open window, any residual moisture will have evaporated by then and it should be fine - I've been doing that for close to 10 years with no issues, water on electrics is fine as long as it has time to evaoprate with no current passing.
