I have £2000 in the bank that I got back from GE bank after I convinced them that they mis-sold me store card protection insurance (long story, followed advice of that moneysavingexpert bloke). Naturally I want to spend the cash on some lovely new woodworking machines, but the wife is adamant I use it to pay off another credit card :( Any ideas on how I could persuade her to come round to my way of thinking? :D Was initially thinking about putting it towards a Record C26, but after reading threads here its going to be seperates.

Sorry to be a doom sayer, but in the current climate, I would advise you to pay off that credit card!

Well, if you insist. The way I normally do it is make up a few scenarios where is would help her out in some way. Most of the tools in the workshop are on the promise of some item of furniture or other. Works most of the time tbh but lately she's beginning to wonder (nag) about the lack of production. ](*,)

But even I am tightening the belt with this impending 'credit crunch' (and new house and new baby etc). To help your situation you could 'do a deal' with the missus, in that you use 60% to pay off the CC and 'treat' yourself.

My advice should be taken with a pinch of salt, as last time I wanted to spend some money... I had to buy her a car!

I've made the decision the other way in the past Dave - it's not worth the hassle or the interest - think of the money you'll save that means you can buy the latest gadget - and it'll be in the future so it'll be even more amazing than you can get today!

Good strategies, but I guess you're right. Its very much a case of drooling over stuff in the catalogues and convincing myself I absolutely need that new P/T, T/S etc.. Think about how much better I would be if I had all that stuff :) We've probably all been there. As a fairly inexperienced hobbyist it's easy to look at the likes of Norm with all his Gucci gear and think that to even have a chance of making anything you need all that stuff. Credit card it is then. At least that will keep SWMBO happy (for a short while).

Don't spend to 2k its too much in one go. The pleasure may be all too fleeting anyway.

I'd say get an axy table saw and a scheppach p/t. Second hand if possible but at least you'll have a couple of decent starters.

Or go axy t/s, and axy thicknesser and planer separates. you'll be happy and you've compromised a bit.

spend 1k max.

cash in the money, got to the casino, put it all on black

then you can pay off the credit card AND get the tools :D :D

DISCLAIMER : Any advice given hereby on this here thread should in no way be taken as common sense but more likely the ravings of a madman

But don't you just enjoy that daydreaming/drooling/choosing? I'm convinced it's far more pleasurable than actually having the kit there to use? Or perhaps that's just me.

Think of the months of drooling while you save up!!!!

I go to the websites, order what i'd like, after doing all the research etc, and stick it in the basket. Then remind myself I can't afford it and empty the basket.

It so good to know that I'm not the only one!

If you're stupid enough to have £2000 of unsecured debt on a credit card I suggest you don't buy machinery, you will kill yourself and possibly those around you!

Sheesh, how do people manage it?

That's what I did but people do look at you as though you're some kind of freak when you tell them you don't have a credit card. I checked into a rather nice hotel in Enniskerry last week and the chap at the desk wanted to swipe my credit card, he was rather thrown by it and I had to explain that it wasn't that I was refusing him access to my card but rather that I didn't have a card in the first place. But then I'm obviously a cave dweller :)

Cheers Mike

EDITED to insert a missing word.

I find that incredibly insulting to those of us who have cards. I have a lot more than £2k of credit card debt - all on 0% rates. I also have cash (working for me in other forms) so that I am always able to pay off the cards if the 0% offers are ever removed by the lenders.

To simply dismiss people who utilise cards is shortsighted.

I haven't used one for several years now. People might look at you as if you are a bit odd - but then I just look at them and think of the thousands they are paying in interest charges........

It's a no-brainer as they say.

Cheers

Indeed, pay that b****y cc debt. And you need only 1 at most

I about know how that is, explaining you don't have a card to pay with.

In the Netherlands about everybody owns a debit card (called pinpas). I looked it up 97% of the dutch population has one or more. I do'nt have one and often need to explain I don't have one and get very strage looks. A year back or so I switched my deposit account to another bank because the bank forced me to have a card.

I do have a credit card though to be able to make purchases abroad. The card has about a 2000 euro limit. I've never came even near the limit, each month the deposit account is automattically charhes to pay of the card. There is always more than enough on it to cover the cc. I always make sure off it. If the cc would not be vocered the purchase would be delayed.
