    Practice for comp

Turned this bowl tonight as an experiment for what I will attempt for the May competition. I think the wood is Zebrano? and I only chose that blank cos I was given a bit of it. I got 5 blanks from it, approx 5in x 5in x 2.75in. It was a bit rushed, not finished with my usual attempt at a good...

    DIY pyrography

Spent a couple of hours in the garage and came up with this. Saw it on another post and thought I would have a go. Now I just have to make something to burn. Doug

    My first lidded bowl

After looking round Gordons website, I have now given in to the finial on top. My first real attempt at a bowl with undercut, first attempt at ebonising, first lid, first finial. Bowl I think is teak?. Just under 6in diameter by 4.5in high including finial. Lid is a bit of pine I had in the...

    My mushroom attempt

Not as straightforward as I thought it was going to be. Still, had lots of practice with the various tools. Used some of the wet cherry branches I picked up a couple of weeks ago. My first attempt is in the bin, the one on the right is my second attempt, even the other one isnt right. No finish...

    Another lesson learned

Thought I would attempt a hollow form using my homemade hollowing tool, on my lump of walnut. This is my attempt at a hollowing tool. Not very good at this yet, am I. Went a bit far, but I was happy with the way the tool was cutting. So I ended up with this. I now love turning walnut...

    Dust extraction sorted I hope

Just set up my dust extraction setup. Bought a 2nd hand Microclene 1200 for £40 and a Perform BB100 for £70. Switched them on then brushed up a bit of dust. I was quite surprised by how quick the Microclene sucked it up. Going to have a clean up in the garage, then I`ll order new 0.5micron...

    Questions on dust extractors

Hi, I`ve seen a couple of dust extractors second hand, first is a Rexon DE1000A, the other, a Perform BB100. Cant find much info on them so my questions are:- Can I get 0.5micron filter bags to fit them. Or If I fit hose to the exhaust pipe and run it outside the premises, would that get round...

    Good week this week

Had a good week this week. A customer had a cherry tree and a sycamore tree taken down and told me to help myself. Two car loads has given me a lot of wood, mostly cherry, as I have a large sycamore to take down in my garden this year. I finished my home made hollowing tool, made from an old...

    Platter for critique

Thought I would jump in with both feet and put my platter up for critique and comments. When I read the rules I thought the 75% flat was a minimum and the other 25% you could do what you liked with. So... my rim just happens to be flat but its 25% in total honest. My mistake. Will try to be more...

    Wood question

Picked up some different types of wood cheap today. Yew is approx 6in x 1.5in, elm is 5.5in x 0.5in, the lump at the back is 5.5in x 4.5in, but can anyone tell me what it is. I know the yew and elm are not very big, but I thought the markings on them would look really nice when finished. Going...

    First attempt at hollow form

Tried something different tonight. Its eucalypyus, wet, approx 4in diameter by 3in high. Made with a 3/8 bowl gouge, 1/2in spindle gouge 1/2 and 3/4in skews and a diamond pointy thing. Will have to look at getting a hollowing tool. There is loads wrong with it, but I had fun. Thanks for looking...

    Oak bowl question

Just finished a small oak bowl, about 4in by 2.5in. As I was shaping the bottom, a couple of cracks appeared. Was this bad technique on my part or were the cracks already in the wood? Its not a big deal for me as the bowl was turned to hold my loose change. I also included a photo of the bowl on...

    Sapele bowl

Had a couple of hours on the lathe last night, turning a bit of poplar. Not much success. The wood cracked, and the colours looked very muddy. Still, it was good practice. Tonight I thought I would use one of the bowl blanks I picked up a few weeks ago. It had sapele written on it. Its about 5in...

    Small cherry bowl

Didnt have much time to play tonight, but managed this small bowl made of cherry. It was only about 4 x 1 inches, and I wasnt sure of what was going to come out of it. Wanted to try making something with a hole in it, that was intentional. My wife loves it, and has now claimed it for her...

    Clarke CWL6 drill chuck

For anyone with an old Clarke CWL6 lathe, this is how I added a drill chuck for the tailstock. I bought a length (3ft) of 3/4in Whitworth (checked for size by trying a nut from the tailstock) threaded bar. Took it to a small engineering shop and had them cut an 8in length off it, and cut a new...

Just time for a little play tonight

Managed a couple of hours on the lathe tonight. Tried something different. Loads of things wrong with it, but gave me practice using different chisels and cuts. Its oak 3.25in od 2.5in id and just over half inch wide. 1 coat of button polish to seal, and 2 coats of wood silk wax polish. Great...

    Face mask advice please

Hi, I am new to this hobby, and am looking for a bit of potection from dust. I have read up a bit and see that ideally I would be getting a chip extractor and also a fine particle extractor with fine filters. I know its healthwe are talking about, nut my budget wont stretch to this at present...

    New tools arrived today.

Just got in from the garage, after trying out my new gouges (roughing and bowl), round nose scraper (didnt actually use that one) and parting tool. After opening the box, I think the few tools I already have are for making pens. Due to budgets (have to pay my tax bill at the end of Jan) I went...

Got some wood for the comp and made this

Popped round to a joinery shop (he is a customer of mine), and asked if they had any offcuts suitable for turning, for sale. Got 3 bits, 39 x 7 x 1.75 inch, 45 x 3.75 x 3.75 inch and 29 x 2 x 2 inch, in oak for £5. I reckon most of my competion entries are going to be in oak. Got Keith Rowleys...
