    panel beading putty.

Hi I've been looking around at some solid fielded panel doors online. It looks like a lot of them use beading to hold the panel in rather than using a groove in the rails/stiles and mould them with a decorative finish. I'm guessing they just glue and pin the beading on, but do any of you...

    door hinges; mortised or not?

cheers do you need to use special half mortise (i think thats what they call them) for this technique or would ordinary hinges be fine?

    door hinges; mortised or not?

Hi everyone I've never really done any site joinery before but gave hanging an internal door a go for the first time this weekend. It looks pretty good for a first attempt but by no means perfect. I have since become a little obsessed with hinges  . Looking around the house I've seen...

hardwood lipping kitchen worktops (bushy/melamine type)

Cheers guys. Thanks for the tips, I've been playing around today. I tried the paper technique but struggled with it. I also tried scraping at a slight angle with more success. From having a go at it I think I can safely say this is why hardwood flush lipping is not seen often on plastic...

hardwood lipping kitchen worktops (bushy/melamine type)

Hi everyone Just wondering if people have had much success fitting a solid edge lipping to kitchen work tops whilst keeping the lipping flush to the top? I have just tried gluing and pocket screwing the lipping to the work top, this worked fantastically (Pocket screws on underside of worktop)...

tool insurance, what to watch out for?

Hello everyone. I am looking in to tool insurance. At present I am a hobby user but have invested considerable money in tools and machinery both woodworking and mechanics / engineering tools. As the topic suggests, are there any pitfalls to be aware of regarding tool insurance? Basically...

    whitehead machineary

Ah cheers Kirk sounds very useful. It is a nice nice machine and If it works, or at least looks like it works I'll do a full rebuild. The main reason to clean everything up and de rust etc but whilst I'm at it I'll repaint it as the brush painting just looks nasty, they could have at least...

    whitehead machineary

cheers Dan Yeah the only images I can find are grey/blue or green similar to Wadkin. I'll have a think, wont be for a while yet as I have lots of other DIY projects on the go. I'm just wondering if I will get it back together, it looks rather complex with the sliding tables. I think lots of...

    whitehead machineary

Hi friends, The Junior Whitehead planer thicknesser I bought last year has been sat in storage since. Hopefully I can get it up and running soon. If all's ok, I'll try and do a full rebuild as it looks scruffy. I'm annoyed as I bought as a 'fully reconditioned' unit. What they forgot to...

    Thicknesser; which Amp supply?

Thank you Roy. I can't wait to get the thing up and running! It looks a bit tatty at the moment though so made need a full rebuild but I'll worry about that when I come to it ;)

    Thicknesser; which Amp supply?

Cheers Digit, I'll speak to my pal when he's about next. He's semi retired now and still busy so it's very hard to get hold of him at the moment. Is possible to do what we were planning i.e. fitting 16 or 20 amp sockets in a domestic garage? The plan was to have them on their own fuse box...

    Thicknesser; which Amp supply?

Hi guys Was feeling a bit better today so managed to see the motor plate again with a mirror and torch (plus lots of patience!!) The motor is a Brooks Motor lmt from Do??field England 1 Ph(ase) 2 hp 11 Amps (preceeded by two letters but can't make them out) 50 cycles 230 / 240 v Speed...

    Thicknesser; which Amp supply?

Cheers Carlow i have a copy of that 9 fingers book, excellent piece but well above my head. I'll try and get the motor plate details again on here but from memory it was a bit of weird one when I posted last time i.e. didn't really give much details. If I get time tomorrow I'll have a gander ;)

    Metabo Planer Thicknesser

Cheers guys. I know what you mean about loudness, I believe its because portable thicknessers use brush motors. However Metabo one is advertised as using an induction motor, which in theory should be a bit quieter/nice to use.

    Thicknesser; which Amp supply?

Thanks guys. I think i understand what you are saying, but i will pass the information on to my pal. Maybe the machine has always been single phase then, it was a while ago since I bought it so can't remember what the seller said fully. Shame its had no use though, it looks a nice sturdy cas...

    Metabo Planer Thicknesser

Ah that would be grand. I must admit at the Screwfix price its a bit more than I wanted to spend. I've been reading around and was thinking whether I actually need the jointer part? If I used a decent blade on my table saw or a router table jointer I'm sure i'd be ok with that. Its not...

    Thicknesser; which Amp supply?

Hi My thicknesser that I bought about a year ago has still not been used :( Its an old Whitehead Junior model. The person who I bought it off said it has been converted to single phase (was originally 3 phase). However when I tried it with a 13 amp plug it started to spin and then blew the...

    Metabo Planer Thicknesser

thanks I have searched on here and it gave mixed opinions hence why I wanted to post on here. They just don't seem to be that popular on the net though, I can't find any decent reviews. The other plan was to buy just a thicknessing machine and hand plane/ use a sled to level out slightly bent...

    Complete newbie.

Hi Ash, Treat yourself and buy some toys, oops i mean tools :p Beware though its really quite addictive as a hobby but great fun. More experienced members will be better suited to recommended a basic tool kit. Don't forget you can buy timber planed all round, ready machined so to speak...
