my first comission for my almost set up workshop

By my calculations the top will weigh 420kg before you put any steel rod in it  Also suppliers with 24ft lengths of timber are not common. And if there is any sort of rail running along the length of the table supporting the top, you'll struggle to get your knees under under it and still...

    Underfloor heating

Have been involved with several u/f heated installations and never had problems. In fact customers have been chuffed as nuts (no ugly rads, nice even heat etc). Wrt to solid wood floors, did you leave the board in the heated room(s) for a substantial period of time before laying? Absolutely...

    storage space in garage roof

You don't say what the roof pitch is. If it is 45 deg then your head room would be approx 4 ft. If as low as 30 deg then headroom only approx 2 1/2 ft. Also taking 3 ft out of an 8 ft span only leaves approx 2 1/2 ft useable level space each side of your opening, with diminishing useable space...

    Tool Gloat and advice request

You're right. Maths is not your strong point  If you used 4 dominos in a stile/rail joint, half of the total size of the 4 dominoes will end up glued into the stile of the door (the other half being in the rail). So half of the total glue area of 4 dominoes will be used in the stile part...

    Tool Gloat and advice request

You don't even have to do the maths. Just look at and compare the joints. Lay 2 complete dominos on a 100 x 75 tenon and use your eyes.

    I rest my case.

    Tool Gloat and advice request

OK, I do see your attraction to using the domino, but consider this. Assuming a 100mm stile to 100mm rail joint. Using 4 doms 50 x 10 gives you 4Doms x 2glue faces per dom x 25mm dom depth x 25 dom width = 50sq cm of total glue area in the stile of the joint. Compare to a trad through tenon...

    Bargain for someone?

Someone who sleeps all day cos he ain't got a job and goes out at night nicking tools? It means there's lots of it on building sites just waiting to be nicked. I'm suprised he's not got a few transformers on offer as well.

It's all knocked off gear innit. Bet he can't show you any purchase receipts

    Tool Gloat and advice request

Hmmmmm. Looked at this and I'm not sure. In that project, only one domino in each joint is used on the "tight"setting. The rest are on the loose setting. For me this adds little mechanical strength to a joint which traditionally would be a large M and T. Personally, with room sized doors, I...

    Cloakroom Cupboards

Hi Russ Nice looking units. But not the same as designed? Also just curious - why use chestnut for a paint finish? Is it cheap as chips en France? Or did you have some spare?

    Garage Build

Hi Doc You will need Building Regs approval as well as planning permission. The Building Control Officer is the sole arbiter of whether your foundation dimensions and depth are satisfactory. He will want to see a trial pit dug adjacent to the party wall to ascertain ground conditions there. I...

    Felder sale

Jeff Again, sorry to hear of your problems. I can only speak as I find, and i've been fairly happy with my dealings. When I found the riving knife on my saw/spindle had not been correctly fitted, a call to Richard at MK and he talked me through it and it was done in no time. OK, shouldn't have...

    Forum attitudes lately

I think Brad has hit the nail on the head. Those of us who spend our days "on site" can't get by with just having a sly dig and slinking off to hide in the ether. It usually gets sorted out there and then, one way or another. The water taking and banter are all part of the day. If you don't...
