    Rutlands Chuck Offer

Hi Vic, I'm a bit late but it might give you some encouragement to know that I bought that chuck to check it out and ordered three more the next day. It's a bit of a luxury having a chuck for each of the most used jaw sets but, at the price, I think I got good value. In 6 months I've had no...

Where to buy extra long drill bits?

Thanks guys, I'll report back later. Things have gone downhill here with family issues and illness so it might be a while. However, I do appreciate your help very much. Brendan.

Where to buy extra long drill bits?

I need drill bits with the capacity to drill 3.5mm x 120mm and 4.0mm x 120mm holes. Could someone point me to a reliable source please? Thank you, Brendan.

Time for a self challenge - new carving

This is brilliant! I love to open this section of the forum and see a new message signal against this thread. I called my wife to see what you have done so far (she was in England for 3 weeks so missed the start) and she was very impressed indeed - and she's not easily impressed. I look...

    See through acrylic blanks

This is a common problem with acrylic blanks. Just paint the brass tubes black or a dark colour to match the blank. Brendan.

    Help with automata please

YouTube has loads of videos. I am very interested in this area too so thanks for posting those links. Brendan.

Time for a self challenge - new carving

Just a bust. It's a practice piece to try to get proportions and relief right. Brendan.

Time for a self challenge - new carving

That's looking well. Be careful with thin edges running with the grain because I'm carving a bit of Lime at the minute and my Santa Claus is on his third nose but that could be more to do with my skill than inherent weakness in the wood. Brendan.

    Dust Extraction / Dust masks

Jen, I apologise. I forgot about the coarse filter bag because I'm going to put the extractor outside in a small shed so blowing fine dust around my work area won't be an issue for me. When I saw your target budget and it matched mine I jumped in too soon. Brendan.

    Dust Extraction / Dust masks

Hi Jen, Have a look at the Fox F50-842 2hp Dust Extractor. It's right on your money and someone here said it is the same machine as the Axi ADE2200. I was in a hardware store a few months ago and a man who has a joinery business came in and bought three of them because he was so impressed...

This is very interesting because it's amazing how you have worked around the blemishes. Very impressive. Brendan.

    New lathe EIP!

Super job! I have the same lathe and I am delighted with it. When it comes time to change the belt take the numbers to your local Belt & Bearings place and get one there. I replaced the toothed belt with a solid belt and I think the drive is better. I was told Jet are sending solid belts as...

    Baxi open fire

My house was built in the 1920's and I had a similar problem when I lit the fire. I don't have underfloor draught. I had lined the chimney to make sure all was safe but when I lit the fire smoke seeped into the room. I discovered cracks in the fireplace that allowed smoke to escape from the...

Wooden rake making.... R.I.P. Trevor Austin

I watched that video last night... three times, and it was wonderful. I love the relaxed, confident manner of a man who knows exactly what he is doing. Brendan.

Time for a self challenge - new carving

Hi, The piece tapers on one side but the bark inclusion is half way up. However, I measured to where I reckoned the wood was sound so the first dimensions would be your workable area. If we could see inside wood it would be useful but, alas, there's always the possibility of a surprise...

Time for a self challenge - new carving

The biggest piece I have has, I estimate*, a usable area of 23 3/4" x 5 1/2" x 3 3/4". There is a bark inclusion on one side so, maybe you could get 6" on the other side instead of 5 1/2". If it's any use you can have it. Brendan. * The piece is about 7" wide at one end going to about 6...

What size of a piece do you need? I'll see if I have a lump that might do the job. Brendan.

Time for a self challenge - new carving

I got it shipped. I can't remember how much it was but, divided over many pieces carved it seemed reasonable. I think it cost about £70 for 30kg but I was able to specify sizes I wanted so that was useful as I don't have a bandsaw. Here's an Ebay link to Paul Conroy. I just send him a...

Time for a self challenge - new carving

I'm in NI and ended up buying Lime from Scotland, Paul Conroy, Scottish Hardwoods. I've bought a couple of times and each was good stuff, dry and sound. Brendan.

    BA cancellation - unexpected consequence

This happened to me last year. I booked flights to England for my wife, daughter and I to attend an event but my daughter had to change plans and didn't come home to start a holiday as expected but remained in England. Our plan then was to return home, as booked, together. I didn't cancel my...
