    Alignment of bandsaw wheels??

Earlier in the year I bought a secondhand - though in good nick - Rexon BS3050AL 12.5" bandsaw. Having used it quite a bit now I'm beginning to wonder if there's something wrong with it. It's to do with the alignment of the wheels in relation to each other - the top wheel is a quarter inch or...

What's your 'general purpose' bandsaw blade?

Thought I'd revive this thread as it deals with the question I was about to ask before doing a search. I've picked up a Rexon 12 1/2" bandsaw that's been little used - thought I couldn't go wrong at £70 - and want to get a replacement blade(s... in time!). I'm just after a general purpose blade...

Final bevel angle on low-angle block plane

Ah, but you're a Clifton man (he typed with feral, drooling jealousy). I supose it really just comes down to the steel in your iron if you're looking for a very low cutting angle: I imagine only the new fangled steels like A2 could cope with a final bevel of just 25 degrees or less. Paul, while...

Final bevel angle on low-angle block plane

Ah, so a final angle of 23 degrees appears to be way off the mark. I'd come up with this polished bevel angle after reading an article by Lonnie Bird in which he suggested an angle of 35 degrees could sometimes be used in a LABP. So I assumed this was a combination of the 12 degree bed and the...

Final bevel angle on low-angle block plane

I was wondering what angle most people would settle on for the final polish on the blades of their low angle block planes: this would be the second or even third bevel. I've been experimenting with my old stanley version by grinding the stock blade at just under 20 degrees, then honing it at...

Torx or square head stainless steel screws?

Thanks for all the info, guys. That warehouse direct link looks very promising - I see their stainless screws have the segment removed from the tip to give a cutting edge. Staffie, do Bee-Fast do the stainless screws in torx or square head, or maybe they do both? Yeah, my experience of...

Torx or square head stainless steel screws?

Does anyone know of a UK supplier for stainless screws with either of these types of heads? I'd settle for square heads but am really after torx. Took a look at the Spax stainless screws offered by Axminster and Screwfix but these only seem to come with the pozidrive heads. I've been trying to...

Regular Lie-Nielsen blade in a Stanley block plane?

Jason, Ray Isles does an 11 slot replacement for the older 60 1/2s. Though, it's just 1/10" thick as I don't think he does this blade in his thicker or D2 range. If Isles did an 1/8" thick equivalent to the Lie-Nielsen I'd go for his instead as I could avoid the hassle of overseas shipping.

    Good source of Polymite (Extramite/Cascamite)?

Newt, Cascamite (there have been so many needless name changes I don't think anyone will ever call it anything else!) isn't completely waterproof. It was very popular back in the 70s/80s and before with dinghy builders; another good urea-formaldehyde used in this field was Aerolite. My uncle...

    Good source of Polymite (Extramite/Cascamite)?

Where does Titebond III rank on the PVA scale - if it even is a PVA? The thing that has always attracted me to Casca/Extra/Polymite is that when you mix it correctly it has a nice thick consistency; the result of proper mixing means that it doesn't run easily and has good gap filling properties...

    Good source of Polymite (Extramite/Cascamite)?

Given that Polymite (formerly known as Cascamite, then Extramite) has a short shelf life I'm concerned about buying any from my local hardware store as the pots have been sitting on the shelves for months. Indeed, they seem to date from sometime before the change from Humbrol's ownership: the...

    Grinder question?

I don't think I'd chance letting the Axminster run for 15 minutes never mind an entire day; this 'running hot' business is totally new to me and not half worrying. Is the Creusen fan cooled or a hotty? As for the build quality of the Axminster I doubt it would be in the same league as the...

    Which honing compound?

Hmm, given the apparent differences in the various compounds it might be necessary to experiment with a few to find which one - or two - works best. They're not expensive anyway so it's not like buying a whole raft of different stones. I'm going to get Zenith's jeweller's rouge for now. I want...

Regular Lie-Nielsen blade in a Stanley block plane?

I contacted Lie-Nielsen and they in fact do three different 60 1/2 blades: the single slot version to fit the Lie-Nielsen; one with 11 to fit the older Stanleys; and a three slot blade that's compatible with modern Stanleys that have the lateral adjustment. Interestingly - or maybe that should...

    Which honing compound?

Those are Zenith as well, aren't they? I just wonder about the need for the second white compound if it's the case that Zenith's green soap is something similar to Koch's or Veritas'. If the green stuff contains particles less than 0.5 microns in size what unearth could the white contain that...

Regular Lie-Nielsen blade in a Stanley block plane?

As well as honing compound I'm also looking to get a replacement blade for my Stanley 60 1/2 block plane. Would a regular LN blade - not the thinner kind designed for retro-fitting a Stanley or Record - fit into my old 60 1/2. Mines the older type of block plane that pre-dates the change to the...

    Grinder question?

Thanks, Dave. The penny never dropped to look up the trade definition: I was looking for a number on the machine. Doh! But yeah, it does get very warm, quickly. Don't know if I'd have the courage to run anything until it got too hot to touch - are there really motorised machines intended to be...

    Which honing compound?

Ahh, but do they charge postage - and crucially to Northern Ireland? There's sort of a magnetic attraction between me and the particular products Axminster stock as I can lump them in with other much needed - no sniggering at the back - stuff and eliminate postage at £45 an order. And that...

    Which honing compound?

I'm going to start stropping my plane blades on a piece of mdf charged with some of that honing rouge. I made up a leather strop but the leather is too soft as I made the mistake of getting pieces intended for uppers in shoes - don't want to round over the bevel or ruin the flattening job I've...

    Grinder question?

That's all I intend using the grinder for but although a small nick shouldn't take that long, regrinding a new bevel angle could be more time consuming. Also, I was thinking of having a go at a beat-up lawn mower blade that might need a major amount of metal removal! There isn't a plate on the...
