For anyone looking for a bargain during the pandemic, your wait is over; here is the news that Bridge City has slashed its prices. A bench plane can be had for under $600, which is a 40% price reduction. What a bargain! While I'm glad that someone makes high-end tools, I wonder who...

    Diagnosing sharpening problems

I'm hoping for advice about how I can learn to diagnose sharpening problems and ways to improve. I've done a sharpening course and haven't had any problems sharpening until today. Today I was sharpening my No.4 smoother. It's a Quangsheng plane with a T10 iron, and I love using it. Until...

    Spokeshave for hogging off material

Please could anyone recommend a spokeshave that's suited to hogging off material? I'm guessing that I need something with a mouth that's quite open, as well as a flat bottom and a blade that's easy to sharpen. Being easy to adjust wouldn't go amiss too, although I'm happy using light taps for...

Oil for rust inhibition without attracting dust and dirt

I've discovered that PS88 lubricant is invaluable. It was designed as an oil for locks, which means it inhibits rust yet resists dust and grit. I found that many other oils can attract dirt, but PS88 avoids this problem.

    Tips for buffing wax

I’ve just experimented by applying Liberon Wax Polish over (long since cured) Danish oil. It’s worked nicely to bring out the grain, but ... ... I’m disappointed that the wax hasn’t added much sheen. I polished off the wax with a lint-free cloth. Should I have used a furniture polishing brush?

Who spends £1000 on a woodwork book?!

It seems there are some incredibly wealthy (or crazy!) book collectors out there. Copies of 'Handsaw Essentials' are going for about £350 to £1,000  Has the world gone mad?

John Lloyd's latest blog on jack planes

In case anyone's interested :) I spotted that John Lloyd's latest blog challenges his own favouritism of the 5 ½ jack plane: "So their main strengths seem to be that they look like a proper plane and if they’re tuned up, with a decent, sharp blade fitted, they’re pretty efficient at planing...

Colron vs Liberon Danish oil: water resistance

I’ve been using Liberon Danish oil and been happy with the results. However, I now want an oil finish for an outdoor table and Liberon’s oil doesn’t claim to be water resistant. Colron does claim its Danish oil is water resistant. So could anyone tell me what it’s like? (I realise that “Danish...

I'm part way through a piece that has oak and pine next to each other. I already have Danish oil for oak. Please could anyone advise what this would be like on pine? Would a different finish be better for adjacent oak and pine? (Before anyone asks, I happened to have some pine around that I...

Preventing rust: camellia or 3-in-1 oil?

For preventing rust on hand tools, is there any difference between using camellia oil or regular 3-in-1 oil? I’ve seen that camellia oil is marketed as ideal for hand tools. How come? Is it any better than good old 3-in-1 oil?

I thought this could be of interest: MIT's robotic carpenters take the hassle out of custom furniture "If you want to build custom furniture, you usually need to know your way around a saw and devote days to both designing it and cutting every last piece. MIT's CSAIL might have a better...
