    Bending a silver steel rod?

I'm making a replacement clamping lever for a drill press collar. It's 5/16 silver steel rod and I need to put a 50-60o bend in it. I'm worried that if I just put it in the vice and heave/bash it, then either I'll get nowhere or I'll snap it? I don't have access to anything remotely like a...

    Meddings or Fobco?

I'm just finishing re-furbishing a Meddings DrilTru MkII; it's taken a while, and in the meantime a Fobco Star has arrived. They're both great drills. Which to keep and why? Both are benchtop and neither has any fancy differentiating features.

Where to get motor plate rivets?

Doing a pillar drill restoration and managed to lose one of the teeny rivets that holds the info plate on the motor. It pinged off and is lost to science. What are they called, where can I buy them and how are they measured? Thanks!!

Advice re. replacement pillar drill table

I've rather optimistically posted a wanted thread looking for a pillar drill table that would fit a Meddings Driltru Mk II (2 3/4" shaft). In the rather likely eventuality that I don't find one, my plan B was to use a piece of 40mm melamine-faced plywood that I have. Then there are options: 1...

Wanted Looong shot - pillar drill table

I'm putting together most of the bits of a Meddings Driltru MkII. I've dug most of it out of the rust and grime, but it's missing the table/platform itself. The shaft is 2 3/4" Anyone got a spare table that would be suitable? I'm posting another thread looking for advice on my plan B!

Circlips - what's the magic secret?

I'm doing a small restoration...and having a horrible time with the circlips of all things. I have tried two different circlip pliers...and the clips just ping off every time as I try to stretch and lift them. I think the holes are slightly rounded off so the pins of the pliers are skating out...

    Replacement compressor

My little Stanley air compressor has died. Not a flicker of life; even the switch LED doesn't come on. I will take it apart somewhen, but it was both a bit undersized and very noisy. So what would be a good replacement? At the moment I use it to clean dust out of the corners of the bandsaw...

    Wanted 0.5 - 0.75hp 3 phase motor

After a motor for a project. Foot mount and 19mm (I need to check) spindle. 4 pole/1450 or slower. Anyone got one knocking about that they'd sell me?

    VFD 1-3PH 240V on 400V motor

Just checking: if I have a 3PH 400V motor and I use a 240V VFD to go from 1PH to 3PH, am I correct that the motor will just run at 2/3 speed? So I can use the VFD to get whatever speed I want (accepting less torque above 2/3 rated speed) and don't need to worry about star/delta? Finally, is...

Multico owners - would you like helical cutters?

Those nice chaps in Canada make after-market spiral cutters for all sorts of machines...but not yet Multico. They can do, but it's a bit steep for the first person in the queue as it stands. There are a fair few of us Multico owners here. Anyone want to share the cost of the first order? I...

FTAGH Motors/workings from a recliner chair

Long shot, but before I go to the tip this afternoon, does anyone want the workings of an electric reclining chair? It'd be collect only from chalfont st peter (you don't have to take the chair, that really does need to go to the tip) Two motors as pictured and a larger controller box I guess.

    Which bandsaw as an upgrade?

I've got a Record Power BS350S, which has been really good...but, perhaps inevitably, now want something a bit bigger for cutting up bowl blanks and resawing. Not huge, but perhaps 16-20" rather than 14". I've also been persuaded by my ancient pillar drill, planet and thicknesses, that old, well...

    Cutting/routing/finishing HIMACS Acrylic

I'm meandering towards mounting a router in my saw table and have been given a largish offcut of HIMACS 20mm acrylic that will fit nicely. This website HIMACS | LX Hausys UK says it can be worked as wood, but Lathams HIMACS | Solid Surface Material | Commercial | Residential | Latham Timber say...

    Table saw router addition/conversion

I'm getting a bit frustrated with my little router table, especially the fence is annoying to adjust and I always seem to want a bigger area than it provides. I'm also not over-supplied with space. So been toying with converting the table saw table. A few questions: - How does dust collection...

Bandsaw dust collection - remove plate?

My Record Power BS350 has a 4" dust port and I have a HVLP sucking away via a cyclone. The drive belt has broken, and while I've got the wheel off, should I remove the plat that mostly obscures the port? Or is it designed to try to spread the effect across the drive area rather than just...

    Advice about a ?ruined kitchen!

The tenants have left...and we found the kitchen (relatively cheapo mdf one) in a bad state. A spare cold water feed (the washing machine is upstairs) had been dripping for months and the carcass and doors have swelled and split. Oh, and there was a 1/2" puddle behind the kick board which has...

    Converting a pillar drill?

The one dissatisfaction I have with my Meddings DrillTru is that it's a bore to raise and lower the table. Might it be possible to covert it to rack and pinion, or is that likely to be so impractical that I'd be better biting the bullet and trading for a newer model?

    Collet extensions

I have a Trend T11 mounted in my router table. I'm looking for a collet extension because some of my bits are quite short and the mounting uses up some travel. Also because I'm a bit lazy and winding it down to change cutters is a PITA. So I'm looking for a collet extension. Any pointers on...

    Knack for plane blade setting?

My eyes were never great and have become less great as time goes by. Any easy tricks to get the blade level and at the right depth. I use feel and repeated experimental cuts at the moment but it'd be nice to learn a fast and reliable method

Red oxide ... as a finish?

I know, sacrilege. But... - I like the colour - it's cheap as chips - it prevents rust - it'll be inside the machine (I'm engine-painting the outside) Is there a practical reason why not?
