    Timber ID please

Hi, Can anyone help me identify what timber this is please. Its been used extensively as a display wood (i.e. it isn't painted over, just varnished with a slightly warming colour) in banisters and open tread stairs in a 60s house. Is it larch or douglas fir maybe? Thanks, Pat.

    routing 101

thanks all. It's establishing the centre point of the routed hole that I was having problems with really but barkwindjammer has the answer, thankyou, a 1/2 inch drill bit. I didn't think of that.

    routing 101

I have a feeling I'm asking a question that has a very obvious answer, but I can't see it :( If I need to rout a straight line, I can use batons to ensure the router's lateral position, but positioning the batons always ends up being trial and error. I really need a way of initially positioning...

Well lots of ideas there. Thanks all, think I'll go with tulip then since I already have some in the workshop.

    timber for airing cupboard shelves?

I was about to start making these from pine, then I suddenly thought about resin leakage over time. So... Any better suggestions for something cheap that wont cause problems down the line. Tulip? Thanks, Pat

    AW106PT2 Planer/Thicknesser

Yes, mine arrived a few days ago and it's got a 13amp plug. You're right about the axy tablesaw though, mine came with a 16amp plug too, not sure why though, I've fitted a 13amp plug and it hasn't blown a fuse or tripped the mcb yet. P.

    limits of mdf?

Perfect, it doesn't look like I'll have to stick all the offcuts in the skip after all. Thanks.

    limits of mdf?

I have a 300mm deep x 1000mm x 600mm wall hanging tool cupboard that is just 18mm ply with the back glue/screwed to the sides which are comb jointed together with the lot french cleated to the wall, all seems fine and has held together fine for the last few years. I've been meaning to make a...

    blum help please

Well, it doesn't need to be strictly 180 degrees, but they're going to have full length mirrors on the inside of them so the mirror needs to be able to be visible without standing between the doors. I think I may have found the answer though, it looks like grass do 170 opening hinges that can...

    blum help please

ok, thanks for that, yes, layon was the plan, I was a bit worried about it, now I know. Well 155 is fine, but I'm now wondering whether I ought to just go for face frame to simplify the hinge problem (even if it does make the door fitting a bit more troublesome). Thanks, Pat.

    blum help please

Hi, Every time I look at the blum catalogue, I seem to get more confused, so could someone who knows what they're doing help me please. I'm planning on a row of 24mm thick rail & stile wardrobe doors which need to open to around 180 degrees. As such, they'll need to come out by at least 24mm...

    mirrored door advice please

Perfect, thanks. I've never come across mirror adhesive, in fact I don't think I'd ever have risked it without reassurance.

    mirrored door advice please

Hi, I'm about to embark on a set of fitted wardrobes, the doors of which will each be around 1.8m x 50cm in 19mm veneered mdf with a faux shaker face frame in hardwood (thanks to whoever suggested the idea way back on here somewhere) and attached via 3 kitchen cupboard type hinges. I'm now...

    charnwood w650 size

So, after going backwards and forwards on whether to replace my hideously noisy and somewhat inaccurate Bosch GTS10 and if so, what would fit in my fairly small shop, I think I've finally come down on either a kity 419 (or axy ts200) or a Charnwood W650. Charnwood quote the size as being 1440mm...

    P/T advice please

As ever, the bigger the better  But I've ruled out 6" as being too small, 8" at a pinch will do, 11" would be more likely to cover all eventualities. By and large, I don't mind dimensioning small stock by hand, as it gets bigger, I get less accurate and increasingly bored, so I'm tending...

    P/T advice please

Hi, I'm finally taking the plunge and buying a P/T. The trouble is that size is my primary consideration rather than cost, I have a small shop and need something that wont take up too much space once it's wheeled out of the way (as ever with a small shop, everything has to be be on wheels)...

    Green Dakota Parallel clamps

To be honest, I was a little concerned when I order the dakota cramps, as I do find Dakota quality can be a bit variable (which is reflected in the price really), but as far as the cramps were concerned, there was no problem. I really couldn't justify the price of bessey 1.25m cramps and the...

    Good websites

its probably more than you want to know, but this is the best book I['ve come across on the subject of usability. The title says it all really, so you don'tneed to buy it

Combi's - How much do I need to spend?

I have the 150mm version of the starrett and can't fault it. Prior to getting it (as a gift I hasten to add) I'd ever been a fan of combi squares. I've never had much luck with them and end up only assuming they're roughly square. Since I've had it, I tend to reach for it first as it's always...
