    I cut shims from a old tape measure. It might be a bit too coarse for what you're after but if you have one gathering dust it might do the job.

    You might also want to look at Logosol who make chainsaw mills that are similar to the Alaskan Mill. Google for Logosol and you will find their website. Both Logosol and Alaskan Mill recommend the use of a ripping chain specifically designed for the purpose.

    Thankyou all for your suggestions. I think the best thing is to proceed cautiously and avoid the temptation to cut corners by using coarse abrasives and power tools. I will post back with pics to let you know how I got on. Many thanks :D
