    Recommend a block plane....please

Veritas Apron Plane. Small, holds great in the hand, wonderful feel, and less expensive than their Low Angle Block plane. I don't know how much it costs on your side of the pond, but for the record I like it so much that I sold my LN 60 1/2... DC

    Flexcut knives in London

I walked by there a number of times when I was in London in July, never when they were open though (I was in London for work, and my hotel, the Melia White House was close by), bummer... But they did carry Flexcut from reading the window signs. Take the tube to Warren Street station, they're a...

    WHICH DOVETAIL SAW? WHICH MALLET?

I had a LN DT saw, didn't like it, sold it. Since buying this saw: http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx ... at=1,42884 I've been a convert to Japanese saws, at least the dozuki for now. This saw is the best one that I have tried (and I did try a bunch) among the affordable saws. The product...

Actually how useful do you find a bevel up bench plane?

Now, where's my lightning rod?   How a plane feels in the hand and works for someone is indeed an important criterion. This said, some don't like the Veritas BU planes because they "handle" differently from the Stanley "standard", especially when these people have used...

Visiting UK in a couple weeks

Thanks for all the pointers, I'm now in my hotel in Regents Park, dealing with jet lag and trying to get some rest for work tomorrow... DC-C

Visiting UK in a couple weeks

Yes, but does she have infills in her collection? Actually, we won't be very far from Buckingham Palace if I read my map right, my hotel is on the Strand... DC

Visiting UK in a couple weeks

I finally received office authorization for my planned trip to the UK. Unfortunately, it will not be all fun, as my colleague and I will spend two weeks in London at the Ministry of Work and Pensions for an exchange of best practices between their microsimulation model and ours. However, I...

    Japanese saws

Do you mean this one? http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=48338&cat=1,42884 It is very good... DC-C

    Japanese saws

This Z-Saw, like many if not most affordable Japanese saws, cannot be resharpened, as the teeth are impulse-hardened. I read somewhere that the Z-Saws are hardened to Rc70, basically as hard or harder than files. Bottom line, forget sharpening those. Some think it is wasteful to throw away...

    Japanese saws

That's a pretty good saw. Even the price is decent (from what I've seen tool prices in the UK are just unreal). I have one and like it quite a bit. It's not in the same league as a Yataiki or a Mitsukawa, but it's not in the same price range either  It won't cut dovetails as fast as a...

    Plane Advice

That's the problem... With experience one can make an old plane sing, but without it you're kind of doomed, unless you know someone that can put you through the paces. Unless you know what a tuned plane can do you run the risk of getting lousy results and abandon hand planes altogether. And that...

LV BU Jack Plane Rear Tote

The first time I play golf every year I get blisters in my hands, they go away after a couple games  Never had a problem with any of the LV totes (I own a few of their planes...), but I know that there are people out there that find them "different" in feel from what they're used to...

    Pemuvar planes?

I did send an e-mail in November, I actually had forgotten about it, but I checked my inbox and can't find any reply. Bummer... Sorry 'bout that, DC-C Who'd still like to know more about that plane maker

    Record #10

Mine is nearly mint, has something like 99% japanning, decal still on the tote. the only visible "defect" is some surface rust at the heel of the sole. I don't know how old it is, though. When I have it cleaned up I'll post a pic. DC

    Record #10

Just acquired one of those a couple days ago. I was told they were quite rare, at least on this side of the pond. Does anyone know when they were produced, and are there any "types" associated with them (à la Stanley)? When I picked my plane there was among other things a 050, didn't know they...

    dovetail saw

Here's a worm coming out of the can :) What kind of Japanese saw are you using? That makes a difference... Read this blog entry from Konrad Sauer's site: http://www.sauerandsteiner.com/news/200 ... rives.html (you can check his planes too ) While you can't get a Yataiki saw anymore...

My guess is that he'll start using Japanese saws for his DTs  DC-C

Bench Chisels... The best ones are..........

Imai Sword Steel. Well worth the money (a lot of it) LN's are comfortable, I wouldn't cry if one set landed on my doorstep . Never tried the Barr or the A-I. DC-C
