Nest Of Tables : Will they last more than a week ?

Hi Woodbloke I understand your concerns, they also match some of mine, and I was expecting someone to bring this up. I guess because I am making this for my self and not to sell or give away I'm more inclined to not over worry about what may hypertheticly happen. Lets face it, some one can...

Nest Of Tables : Will they last more than a week ?

    >> My Beogram 4000 record deck with the teak detailing would look fab on it but would it take the weight i wonder Well both Cats have sat on the edge and survived, so looking promising. >> It looks lovely Darren but I'd be worried that somebody would try and sit on it! Thanks to Darwinian...

Nest Of Tables : Will they last more than a week ?

Hi Not posted a project for ages, mainly due to work pressures but had this one on the burner for a while. Now I know the design is a bit of a risk, but you learn from your mistakes. Maybe it will last, maybe it won't. I've done what I think is enough to protect the short grain, but I'm a...

Methods for squaring timber by hand

As a companion to the Charlesworth DVD I would recommend "Rough to Ready" by Rob Cosman. I feel this gives better information on taking a rough sawn board down to size. See this link for further information. https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6784 Best Regards Darren

    Beech Worktop Movement

luckly rested it on top of the MDF. So I lifted it last night and 'sticked' it until the weekend when I'll take out the MDF. Thanks for the advice. Thought that would be the answer but always nice to check Darren

    Beech Worktop Movement

Hi, I have been rebuilding my bench after my old bench top (laminated chip board kitchen worktop) got water damaged. So thought I would make something better this time. I took care to make the framing nice and flat and added a 19mm sheet of MDF (add some thickness) to the top which was then...

Is 'Furniture & Cabinetmaking' magazine well regarded?

My oppinion for what its worth. I'm an hobbyist, not pro... and to be honest a part time hobbyist at best... the full time job gets in the way alot these days! I subscribe to two mags, Goodwooking and F&C. Originally when my skills were lower, GW was useful and had more realistic examples and...

cost of quality planes and the best cheaper alternative ?

For what its worth here is my view. I class myself as a weekend amatuer. I started out with a stanley N05 and a stanley low angle block, back then the No5 was £50. Sole was way out, so bought some glass to flatten it (£10) and a straight edge to check it (£40 starratt ). Spent a day flattening...

    Float Glass for flattening waterstones

Yes you can..... but don't be fooled like I was and go for toughened.... it sounds like a good idea... stronger and all that... but it isn't flat! It goes through an extra process which adds a curve to it... not want you want for flattening! Darren

    dovetail saw

Hi All As promised the Pax DT saw arrived yesterday, so some pics for you. First off I am no saw expert, so mainly some pics for stats and a few comparisons to what I normally use (Japanese Ikedame saw from Axminster). Its the 10inch and 20tpi. I think they also do an 8inch and 12inch...

    Floorboards

Hi Mark, The only things running under the floor are a couple of lecky wires and a gas pipe - no water pipes - so doubt I would need to lift the floor again in the future (famous last words :) ). So your saying that stuffing standard loft insulation between the joints (netting stops it falling...

    Floorboards

Thanks! I'll give Timbmet a call. I was just going to pop down the local Arnold Laver, but the more quotes the better. Cheers Darren

    Floorboards

Oh No..... Seeds of doubt seriously planted! I live in a Victorian Terraced. The dinning room floor is bare boards sanded and exposed. Quite a few need replacing as they don't look there best and some are cracked/damaged. Also one of the joists has some 'movement' in it and so some of...

    Philly's Stamp

Question for Philly.... Were did you get the tool to do those nice initial stamps in your planes? Always looks nice and a nice way to mark ones work. Can you buy them or were they a one off special? I assume its some kind of stamp or do you carve them all by hand :? Cheers Darren

    Competition Entry Finally Finished

Thanks for the comments guys! I think Rob is right, the handles are possibly a shade too chunky and the idea about tapering the legs i'll take in board and for a standalone piece is a fair comment. But it sits well with the furniture around it which mainly consists of an Oak bed (habitat) which...

    Competition Results

Congrats to all the winners! Some good work was shown! I agree with Tim that I would like to have seen some more entries, especially in the Pro section..... but I suppose we might see more next time! Thanks also to the judges for taking the time and for the comments. Again appologies for not...
