Finish for Red Cedar Garden Gate

Thanks for the replies. The durability was why I picked cedar, but I haven't used it before so wasn't sure how well the finishes would work, and I was keen to avoid it greeting too much. If I just use oil, is the natural durability of the wood likely to prevent mould/mildew growth?

Finish for Red Cedar Garden Gate

Hi All, I've nearly finished a garden gate which I've made from Western Red Cedar, but I'm not quite sure about the finish. I was originally going to make the gate in Oak and had bought some Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra (420) which I had thought I might now use on the cedar instead, however the...

    Cot

Hi Steve, My first proper project was a cot for my son - it took me almost as long to make as it did for my wife to make our baby! I did a rough design on sketchup which was the result if googling a lot of pictures and doing some measuring in shops (fine in Babies'R'Us but they give you snooty...

    Planer problems!!

I had a similar problem on a bandsaw which I bought secondhand - it worked perfectly at the guy's house and then kept on cutting out when I got it home. Turned out it was sawdust inside the NVR switch which had shifted when I'd moved the saw and clogged the switch up a bit, stopping the magnet...

    my first project

If it helps my first real project was a cot too - finished it about 3 months ago, only about a month after the baby was born! It took me nearly as long to make as it did for my wife to grow our boy but was really worth it. I found this website pretty useful when I was working out dimensions for...

    Chopping board glue advice?

Thanks all - really appreciate the advice. I've got a fair but of Titebond III so will probably go ahead and use that, but will have a look at the other suggestions too. I'll let you know how I get on! Cheers, Simon

    Chopping board glue advice?

Hi All, I'm planning on making some chopping boards for Christmas presents and I wondered if anyone had any advice about which glue to use? I was planning on using Titebond III which I've used for lots of other things with no problems, but does anyone have any experience using it or other glues...

Auro 109-90 on a child's cot made from Ash?

Hi, I did look at making it from European Oak but after pricing it up it was simply too expensive - although the Ash is lighter in colour that what I ideally wanted, the stuff I got has a nice grain and was less than half the price of the oak. Just a pain that oil finishes apparently turn Ash a...

Auro 109-90 on a child's cot made from Ash?

Hi All, I am just getting to the final stages of making a cot out of ash for my new baby and with the finish I'm really keen to try to retain the light colour of the ash (and avoid too much yellowing), while still bringing out the grain. I came across a post on here somewhere which mentioned...
