    New development in scraper planes

I got one of those and found it worked very well-maybe I did not read the instructions very well....I then went on to make two blades of different thickness to experiment with and became more happy. I scraped some African Blackwood, Iroko, Afzelia and some fortified pine made here in New Z. I...

    Rapier planes...

Yes, I had one of those, ex Father, a number 4 size. Nowt wrong with it, machined sole and sides rather than rasped with belt grinding machines, moderate back lash, quite acceptable. The knob and handle were black Bakelite-not nearly as bad as it may sound. Why don't you clean it up? I swapped...

Anyone interested in a Wadkin jointer?

From what I know and what I can see you should keep that machine. To swap the motor for a single phase should be no problem since it would not be more around 11/2 horse at most. Assuming no structural defects it would be a pleasant , rewarding project to strip , clean, replace bearings, spray...

    New plane maker and design

Gary, there was never any need to worry about being an American- Byron had said "the guy is an AMERIAN"-so I was joking when I said ...."even if the guy is an Amerian"..... :D

    New plane maker and design

"That's why it is difficult to beat a simple single blade and wedge, once you've mastered the hammer tapping there is not much that gets in the way. It's a matter of perception-given the Stanley Unlimited Backlash System on the one hand and the Where's Me Flaming Plane Whacker on the other I...

    New plane maker and design

Byron, "The guy is an amerian from Iowa i think, and makes really nice looking wooden planes with a very unique (see caveat) frog and blade system. In today's money with the strong pound they seem to be quite good value - i'm tempted to try the smoother" Er, even if the guy is an Amerian I think...

    Marcou S50

Thanks Ian. I went naked: at this stage I am not sure that a normal chipbreaker is worth the bother, so those two rely on a thick blade and a tightish mouth. Thick to me means 5 to 6 mm-thicker seems needless, plus the mouth starts to get huge. However it keeps crossing my mind that the cap...

    Marcou S50

:) You are quite correct- it is much like a #3 or#4. It is also a protoype. As long as one does not impede the flow of shavings it functions well-one needs to grasp that tote from the front-same as #4. While I was making them this question was nagging away at me- almost put them away in a dark...

Is it, or isn't it? What is it. Is it a drill bit sharpening

I was recently advised that if you want a slightly oversized hole, clearance or sliding fit say, grind one edge deliberately longer than the other....................!!! That is quite correct- I have suffered this phenomenon on occasion, having thought I had "just quickly touched up this...

Tear Out when smoothing - HA Blade?

Les, By all means do not deprive youself of any reason to get another nice plane or better, but in the mean time I think it is essential that you get at least two card scrapers, learn a method of preparing them and see just how good they are- you will wander how on earth you did without them...

    Beaten to a punch

The sap wood kind of distorts how it looks but it feels mostly right. Hey Philly, I am wandering what that wood is youhave there-is it Muninga?(Pterocarpus Angolensis).

    Saws from Toffee?

A trio of saws, two No. 9s, one rip, one cross cut and a DT saw made from Imbuia that's got a bit of figure. These headed for a man in England as I write this. Mike, the novel thumb groove looks as though it is the last word in comfort-I've not seen this before. I believe that folk should need...

    Guess the Holtey

Now that is interesting to know......Folk simply must not cheat by using these hi tech methods  Goes to show that hand made is often the best: not that I advocate making superior planes by hack saw, file and holding the work between one's toes, note. Actually there is no point to this...

The Marcou S15/BU Smoother - Reviewed

David, "People have their preferences, but the two types are fundamentally different. " This will soon be addressed , in the form of a smaller smoother, thick blade , bevel down , high angle bed..... and "If I needed another plane, I would get a Marcou immediately! They appear to be...

German infill maker joins the ranks

On the other hand, Gerard, one of those planes is quite versatile, so if you open up the mouth and get her rolling you can whack off some fat tightly rolled shavings..... :D

German infill maker joins the ranks

Ayeyiyi, Gerard, the use of one of those planes for anything other than the taking of the curliest, fluffiest gossamer thin two inch wide shavings with tapered edges from difficult woods is strictly VERBOTEN!

German infill maker joins the ranks

Bug, I've since found some info re hardnesses in my Little Black Book for Engineers that may settle your nerves a bit. Useing the Brinell Hardness scale we have cast iron as in "mature" Bailey planes at 180hb, and Malleable cast iron as in those better planes from Canada at about 100 to 110...

German infill maker joins the ranks

Hi Ian, Philip....Have you ever scraped bright mild steel?? I have scraped that stuff, but not in the conventional way. I made a base plate for my router with it. I did not use the normal engineers scraper-I used my piece of power hacksaw blade, cut from the original which was 900mm x90...

German infill maker joins the ranks

Bug, (matter of detail, I think his mitre plane should have steel sides, since it's used for shooting, which will muss up his brass) I don't think that is quite correct-even yellow brass (70/30) can cope well enough, especially if the shooting board is equipped with a friendly surface. Then...

    Black walnut suitable for infill?

Wayne-awesome looking creation there. Great execution and plenty of character. Have I applied sufficient flattery to have you disclose how you did the knurling i.e do you use the "normal" type that one forces into the work thereby stressing a small lathe or do you use the type that clamps at the...
