    Onboard sharpening

I can sharpen drills by hand on a grinder but no space for such luxury on a cruising boat. Are there any decent smallish devices which would work with hss bits up to 10 or 12mm? Philip

    Sodium hypochlorite

In NI where I lived till recently every builders' yard sold 20l containers of sodium hypochlorite. It is used for cleaning paving etc. when mixed with water. A very cheap and effective "solution". I am now in Edinburgh and none of the builders supplies I have called have even heard of it. Any...

    Cleaning windows ...

Second floor flat with Edinburgh sash windows. Easy to do the lower case (it hinges in) but how can I clean the upper sash without falling out? I asked a window cleaner with that long pole thingy who was out in the street how much he would charge. £50 for 6 windows, he said. Edinburgh tradesmen...

    Where are the pipe makers?

Impossible to get a set of the border pipes I fancy without a wait of 7 months. Makers say they can't get staff with sufficient expertise to employ. I would have thought it would be an ideal job for someone flung out of the workforce early wanting a life amongst wood and music. Am I wrong?

    Mortising attachments?

I had an Axminster mortising machine which was used to make about 6 garage sized doors over 20 years, but I sold it when I downsized. I now need to make another door. I supposed I could do it by hand but wonder whether bench drill attachments are any good for intermittent use? If so, which...

    Router table for Bosch GTS10J2

Screwfix gave me a 10% off voucher so I bought a Bosch GTS10J2. I sold my cast iron saw when downsizing, and this looks as though it will suit me for the rest of my earthly time. It was seeing a router table installation picture here which convinced me to buy. But I can't find that anymore. Any...

What wood might this table be made from?

Pulling together two houses into one late marriage means that my new wife wants rid of a coffee table which is too heavy for her to move. Sad, I know, but eBay makes its money that way. Any idea what the table might be made from? The underside looks a lot richer in colour than the top. Very...

    That Amsterdam door paint

You'll know what I mean. A deep green with a bit of gloss. Is it some kind of enamel?

I am putting up uprights for twin slot shelving. These have a space at the rear of the (they are long U shaped metal pieces) and the fixings I bought to put into the brick wall are being pulled out by the screw going in (at the bottom of the U). I have used this shelving system before and never...

    Advice on Startrite 352 bearings

I have had a 352SB for some years and just used it infrequently for light work. I have just put a single phase motor on (inverter kaput) and a professional joiner friend was looking at it. He asked why there was no back thrust bearing on the lower bearing. I must admit I never noticed its...

I have a Wadkin BGS sliding table saw. It has been moved around a bit and dismantled and rebuilt. I want to set it up accurately. I am having problems because there are an awful lot of setting options for the sliding section of the table. Anyone know what the best order is? Manual is at...

    Another new, old saw (Wadkin)

I too have been buying off ebay - a Wadkin BGS 12" saw with a sliding table. "Major" problems were: 1. one of the bolts for the bearings for the sliding table was damaged. I damaged the bearing bringing off the bolt (£15 + vat for a replacement) since it was a press fit. Made a new bolt...
