Good first attempt mate.
I have a drill press but I don't use it for drilling pen blanks out. I drill all of my blanks on the lathe as I find it to be more precise. Just remember to keep winding the drill back out to clear the cuttings and this should help reduce the risk of a blow out.

Hi Chris I agree with Brian that it looks like the piece was not sitting central in the face plate. Did you turn the outside shape between centres and the mount it on the faceplate ?

I have the Tormek version and it is a joy to use. My downfall with woodturning was tool sharpening. After purchasing the Tormek sharpening became simples!
The design of that machine looks very similar to the Tormek so I can't see why it won't do the job. Don't know about reliability with it...
